Tuning options (N20)
Greetings!
After a heady amount of research, I may be picking up an X1 xdrive28i for the wife. One of the first mods (post break-in) will be a tuning option. Has anyone on the forums looked into or installed either of the following? 1) http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-25...20-engine.aspx 2) http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-16...20-engine.aspx 3) http://burgertuning.com/N20_BMW_performance_Tuner.html According to Hartge's website, their application is directly for our X1. To me, this is the better of the options - despite the price difference. Opinions? |

Hartge is too expensive for what you are getting IMO.
I am planning to install the BMS Stage 1 after break in. I confirmed that the BMS solution addresses throttle response.

Throttle response is tuned by BMW. Throttle response is the worst in ECO PRO mode to help with gas mileage. Throttle response should be better in Drive and best in Sport mode.
I emailed Burger to confirm that the stage 1 tune addresses throttle response. Because it is drive-by-wire throttle delay can't be completely eliminated. Mileage is unaffected unless taking advantage of the increased power.

Here's a user review of the install and performance of the piggyback tuner by Burger on the X5. I had been monitoring this thread when I still had my X5 before deciding to trade in for the X1.
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=654757 I'm personally going to refrain from upping the boost on the N20, as I plan to keep this car LT and want to wait a couple of years to see how this motor holds up, given its already running ~15lbs of boost in stock form. |

These units are made to mimic the characteristics of the stock tune, albeit with a small tweak - so it's not jarring on stock components. Looks like I'll be a guinea pig if the sale goes through. That said, I would trust Hartge over BMS, but that's just me. |

Snooping around in foruns and the Net, I came around the Hartge bypass module. At the time, Turner was selling it for the F30 (new n20 engine 3 series), and I figured, if the engine is the exact same, it should fit the E84 as well. I contacted Hartge to confirm, they asked for my car's VIN and the response was that it would fit without any issues. The module I am saying is this: http://www.hartge.de/e/bmw_motor_6079.html Well, I bought it at Turner (through Internet), received the module in Brazil and had a specialized shop installed for me. I also installed a set of sport H&R lowered springs, and the car looked amazing. The torque gain is amazing. In second gear, feels like it will burn the tires. Responsiveness improved as well. The module was expensive (US$1250), but I felt like it worth it. Here, in Brazil, no one has an alternative, and even if it had, I felt more comfortable choosing a well known tuning company, such as Hartge is. My car has now 7K Km, and it went last week to the dealer's regular oil service. Car stayed the whole day there, and they didn't detect the module. No problems with the car's warranty, then. I see now that Turner has a cheaper alternative (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-25...20-engine.aspx), but honestly, I don't know this manufacturer (aFe Scorcher), and I would not risk using this one in my new e84. Seems they are not Bimmers specialists. Hartge, on the other hand, is. Hope this helps! Rgds Marco (Brazil) |

Does Turner still offer the Hartge tune? The link no longer works.

You installed the Sprint Booster into your N20 X1? Interesting! I think you may be the first successful install that I have read about.

Sure. If you would like to post pictures it would be nice. I did not mean to make it sound like others have tried. I do not believe I have seen anyone else even attempt a sprint booster install. Every site I saw with the sprint booster for sale did not list the X1 as a supported model. I had a feeling it would work without issue, but since you are the first I have seen report it working I got excited.

N20 Tuning
I have a 20i N20 X1 which i picked up my car in July 2012 and running 5,000km today in Asia Hong Kong.
Ordered my tunes from Terry when running 3,000km and installed at 4,000km. Tunes is worth it as it really minimised turbo lag (20i has great turbo lag @ 184hp on N20). Running it for over 1,000km and have no regret other than manual reset of throttle and/or disengaging power in car for tranny behaviour. If disregarding the tranny behaviour and throttle lag after computer learning your style of driving behaviour in a city mode, the BMS tunes are worth investing as it does not affect fuel consumption and it really helps minimising turbo lag. I've made a compliments to Terry personally wishing him to develop the Stage 2 tuning for N20. |

All I see are upgrades for the diesel models and for the 28i, does anyone know if the Burger piggy back would work on the X1 35i as well. I heard you can get close to 350hp output with the Hartge system which is an additional 50hp over stock. SICK!

It is different hardware than the N20/26, but Burger has tunes for the N55 35i.

Spoke to my dealer who is pro-mods today. They do have an N20 tune in their inventories with a "Coming Soon" status. Just so everyone knows. My guess is the Dinan one is a few weeks away.

I've had the BMS Stage 1 installed for a few weeks now. This tune has made the 28i so much more drivable. Driving in D is like what DS use to be (when you need it) and DS is on steroids now. The power delivery when going full throttle is not as smooth as my N54 335i was, but it feels almost as fast.
According to the folks on the F30 forum, BMW switched to the electronic wastegate on the N20 engines July 2012 (like the N26). BMWVin.com and RealOEM are generally pretty accurate and it seems that all US X1 28i have N20 and not N26. Sticker under the hood shows ULEV II. Either way, this greatly simplifies the BMS Stage 1 install/uninstall which doesn't require engine cover removal and takes less than 10 minutes. Can't wait for Stage 2! Quote:
