My X1 got stuck in the sand :P
I went to the beach last Sunday and tried to move a little on the hard sand ... the X1 only went a few feet and then had to be towed.
Yesterday I told my dealer the incident and he said that if I had turned off the DSC had progressed smoothly, despite being an sDrive and not the Xdrive... is that true? |

Sand is tricky, without the right tires you'll just dig and even any awd/4x4 can get stuck. If you're bored go back with two friends and four 2' wide by 5'+ long carpet rolls. If you get stuck put the carpet under the tires to help get out of the holes your tires dug. But take 4 rolls so you can easily do the 'run around' swap method in case you get stuck and have a long way to go to get out of a bad area. Or get mud tires.

I believe it's for legal reasons they say it's not for offroad use. But xDrive really isn't in the same category as landrovers awd or jeep 4x4 systems for example. The xDrive system will help you in heavy rain, snow, ice, and some dirt road areas and for people in those areas, xDrive will help you get around better, especially to help you see all the trucks with 4wd who've slid off the road when they tried to turn while going too fast. For me, I actually can't even drive my fwd car up the driveway if there's more than a couple inches of snow, but if I turn around and back up I can usually make it. My wife laughs at me when I do this I'll add, but for her she hasn't had a problem once with her WV tiguan even in 8" of snow and that's about the same level of awd as xDrive.

NO...you likely would have failed despite his recommendations...unless the sand was packed really hard. As another reply stated, sand can be tricky. I live near the Outer Banks of NC and have spent a lot of time driving on the beach. The sand there is relatively soft and it always requires 4 wheel or all wheel drive. If you have 2 wheel drive you won't go far. It also helps to let the air in the tires down to about 15-20 psi. Making sure to pump back up once you get off the sand. Have fun in your X1 but stay off the beach.

I believe even the Tiguan's AWD is superior to xDrive in extreme situations. I believe the xDrive's advantage is better driving feel due to the rear wheel bias.

Loose sand and rear wheel drive don't really mix.
I got stuck on very wet long grass in a boggy field a while ago in my Sdrive. Wheels just spun and the DTC kept reducing the power. Turned the DTC off (in fact I turned DSC off too) and floored the gas pedal. I was surprised at how well the car moved and how controllable it was. Rear wheels were still spinning, but I got out the field. Tyres were the ones supplied with car... RFT 225/45 Pirelli. I'm not brave enough to take my Sdrive on sand J. |
