Real World MPG on sDrive28i
Hi all, I'm curious as to whether you're seeing the 34 mpg highway and 28 overall mileage ratings in real world driving, specifically for the sDrive28i.
Post your mpg here for "normal" driving (not flogging it) and differentiate whether you're talking about the sDrive28i, xDrive28i, or xDrive35i. Thanks! |

Sdrive with only 500 miles on it but I recalculated the mileage at 3 different times after putting gas in. First 200 miles 20, second 150 miles 23.5 and last 150 28.5 all mostly city. Used Eco Pro a lot. Just a comparison is the 2010 Mini Clubman S got 26.5 to 28 on the same driving, the Mini was manual. Too early to know for sure but it won't be far off the Clubman. Have not done any highway driving yet.

My trick is take the city mileage announced and take it as your combined real mileage reference. You should be on target.
My x1 28i xdrive is giving me around 12.5 l/100 km (18.8 MPG) city and 8 l /100 km (29.4 MPG) on the higway. I have noticed that the car is very sensitive to any kind of elevation on the road. If the road is flat your mileage will go under 8 l/100 km easily ( more than 29 MPG) but add a couple of hills and you will see a big drop of performance. In Canada, the "test" resulting of the "official" rating for fuel consumption is made on a treadmill so the weight factor isn't an issue at all. The real life is very different. This summer I wen't to Ocean View Nj and was driving essentially on the road " 9 " which don't have many red lights or stop signs so your speed is very consistent at around 35 miles an hour. The fuel economy on this kind of road is amazing on the X1. I was getting around 7 l / 100 km (33.6 MPG ) !!! Remember this is an all wheel drive unit ! Where i'm living I'm going through traffic lights and stop signs at every thousands feet. The result ? I can't get better than 12 litres / 100 km in a week ie 19.6 MPG. Every time you put your foot on the throttle to GO from 0 to anything the car is using a lot of fuel. In fact the realtime consumption needle is always at the top at more than 20 l/ 100 km ( 11.7 MPG) each time I'm accelerating. The "official" numbers will never be realistic till they test it the way we have to drive it. Last edited by loukas135; 10-03-2012 at 12:20 PM.. |

Is it true the 2013's in Canada have an eco mode? With it engaged, how does that affect the driving experience?

'Eco pro' mode really dulls the throttle response and overall does make the car 'feel' more gutless, but if you press the pedal harder/longer the car will eventually deliver the power. If you're just cruising around (and trying to drive economically) you actually don't notice it that much, but if you want any responsiveness the first thing I would do is turn it off.

So far our mileage hasn't improved from around 21 mpg but its basically no highway, mostly stop and go around town. We only have about 900 miles on it and I would be very disappointed if it stayed this low but I expect it to get better once its broken in.

Our 35i is getting about 16.8mpg city and 25mpg on the highway. Driven very short distances for that city number and the one highway trip was done with about 400 miles. We have 1200 miles on it now and will be taking another highway trip this weekend. |

Drive Drive Sport Drive Sport Manual If you want "economy" you "have" to stay in "Drive" mode. The transmission seems to start in second gear and change gears really quickly to favor low revs and fuel economy. In Drive Sport, the gears are maintained longer so the revs are higher giving some "boost" to the car for sure. Even when decelerating the transmission downshifts agressively giving the car a sportiest feeling I'd never had with any previous automatic vehicle I drove in the past. Funny but costly in terms of fuel efficiency. To really appreciate the sportinest of the transmission you can select manual mode in drive sport and then you are the boss. It will shift or downshift as you go. No auto shifting here. If you go redzone then so be it. Of course, adios fuel efficiency. but the sound is great and the performance really cool. It's a BMW after all. If you really want to get fuel efficiency then "Drive" is the way to go. Less fun but better mileage. Finally if you can always select a road with less traffic lights and stop sign, do it. My experience is the more I have to accelerate from a complete stop the worst it is for the fuel economy of my X1. Last edited by loukas135; 10-03-2012 at 05:48 PM.. |

I got about 600 Km from my first tank of gas going from Munich through Austria and pretty much all the way to Venice I'd say 80% freeway (but not flat, and cruising between 80mph and 90mph on average) and the rest city driving, not pressing the gas pedal hard at all (still breaking in) computer says around 24 mpg average

I've been monitoring my fuel economy the past few tanks and if I drive normally (a bit heavy on the throttle) I'll get 18-20mpg all city. When i go easy on the throttle, Ive managed 22mpg all city.

we're getting about 26.1 MPG with 20/80% city/freeway on our S-drive. We've got about 1500 miles. It's been increasing slightly.
For me, I don't think it will get to the claimed 28 MPG. In most of our other cars used in similar driving patterns, we've been able to get hit the EPA combined ratings exactly. That's not to say we are get the claimed efficiency in any car because we drive mostly freeway and over speed limits 75-80 MPH cruise. I think the X1 is not fairing as well because turbo engines are as efficient for our (and maybe everyone's) driving style. I've had one other Turbo and it also seemed a little harder to hit the combine EPA rating. So if one were to drive the sDrive conservatively, maybe, but it wont be easy. Eco Pro seems like BS to me though. It's nothing more than a restraint system for those who don't have good throttle control and/or self control. It dulls the throttle response and it can be annoying when it finally unleashes the restraint and downshifts unnecessarily. I can only see it being useful on a long hwy cruise where the HVAC cycling may be convenient to manually turning the AC On and Off. Someone ought to challenge the benefit of the mode by seeing if any miles can be gained (in Eco Pro) with cruise control On and the HVAC Off. I'll certainly try for a 5 min increment the next time I get chance on a long flat freeway. |

2012 BMW X1 28 xDrive.
The consumption brand new was 10.9 l/100km (aprox 21.58 mpg) It has now 15.500 km on board and the consumption is 9.8 l/100km (~24mpg) Driving is mostly town, sporty driving. We go ouside too, better mileage but unable to give an exact number in this case. |

1141 mile and about 21 mpg. I wish it didn't show average mph because every time I see it I get excited thinking its miles per gallon. We're getting about 3 mpg better than my E93 335 but about 5.5 mpg less than the Mini Clubman S we traded. So far I'm disappointed since we have mostly used Eco Pro but its not broken in yet so hopefully it will go up.

Just took a Thanksgiving road trip to the in laws. Car is still in the breakin period. Over 947 miles of mostly highway driving the computer says we made 29.7 mpg. No eco pro and very little ASS. Average speed was 62.2 mph. I made no real effort to save gas so I'm pleased with those numbers.

I’m coming up on my first 200 miles and the trip meter says I’m only getting 18.9 mpg. I have been babying it so it is not due to a leadfoot. I sure hope this gets better because the mileage was the main reason I chose this thing over my other choices.

I am having a lot of trouble understanding the different figures some of you are giving. Some of you appear to be getting close to EPA and then some of you are getting absolute crap. How can one person get 28-29 hwy and another get 23 hwy? Are we all sure we are talking about the 2.0L Turbo N20 in RWD?

Over the time we had our 135i, it was on California 91 octane for the first few years and had a 50 mile daily commute and got around 25 mpg. Coming to Texas, it had a 5 mile daily commute and got about 16 mpg. However during break in, it rarely got over 15 mpg and over the first five or six thousand miles, things slowly crept up and mileage got significantly better. This was also the case with my M Coupe and various other German cars I've owned. Anyone panicked about early mpg figures needs to relax and wait until you get a few thousand miles on it. Further, consider the conditions you're driving in. My wife's short commute will never allow for her to see the EPA city numbers, but the simple fact that a heavier, awd X1 with the N55 and same transmission as her 135i with the N54, is already getting better mileage with 2.5k miles is a good sign for us. |

I think some people are showing average speed instead of average mpg which is in different order from previous computers. I have 2300 miles and it took a hwy trip of 380 miles to loosen it up and I got 30.9 at 75-80. My city driving has creeped up to 22-23 from 20-21 so I think they just need broken in about 5000 miles.
