Need your help to pull the trigger
Hey guys,
So I'm at a crossroad right now and dont know which turn to take. My e90 lease is up, and I have to make a decision. I went in my dealer today, sat down and spoke numbers as well as test driving 2 cars that fit my budget: X1 - Sport + Nav + Rearview etc White ext with Red inside 328i Xdrive Classic line + Nav White ext with black int Loved the drive of the 328 coming from a sedan right now. The whole X1 thing/SUV is pretty new to me. Things I really want in my car: coral red interior and Nav. (unfortunately, red doesnt exist in the classic line ) What's your experience with the X1? Any of you come from a sedan? Any regrets? Pros and cons? |

I just hit 2000 miles today in our 2013 X1 28 sdrive. I think it is a great vehicle and this is my 14th BMW. The only downsides compared to the 328 would be back seat leg room, gas mileage ( but I got 30.9 on a 380 mile trip today) andmslightly slower but pretty darn fast for a SUV. More utility than the 328 and better steering (hydraulic) if you get an Xdrive.

Didn't drive the new 3 series but thought they drove/ felt very different, so much so that I'd have thought you would prefer one to the other. Was that not the case on ride feel?

Leg room really isnt a worry of mine, neither is the trunk capacity, but I'm sure the trunk I could get used to carrying more easily. Quote:
The X1, suited like I want it, is only coming in December... That's probably why I'm so confused right now... |

Anyway you go, you are fine. That said, I reread your first message which says the x1 was sport and your last which says the x1 was base. I get that one car was sport and the other not but if your first message is right through and through including that you loved the 328 then it sounds to me that you need look no further. If it is helpful, the xi works best for my needs because it is a small suv ( I have large), fits what I need, is higher than a regular car ( driving in snow and on dirt roads) and drives like a car. I went for the 28 because it had plenty of performance and I did not want anything faster because kids will be driving it somewhat.

I'm sorry if it was confusing. I didnt wanna write a novel, but you're right, it does lead to confusion. What I tested: 328i Xdrive, Sports X1, base. After talking numbers and what I'm willing to pay: 328i Xdrive, classic line, only GPS. X1, Sports, Nav, Read park sensor etc... So after driving both, of course the 328i xdrive sport was more fun, no because of the engine solely, but also the feel of the inside the car... I'm not sure if it clears it up a little... What confuses me is that I drove one car pretty much fully loaded and the other naked... |

I believe that the 328 sport includes sport suspension; the x1 sport does not have sport suspension. Except for cosmetics and 18 inch wheels the x1 sport should drive the same as the base ( you can get different 18 inch wheels on the base as a $600 option and save $1300 on cosmetics but there is a somewhat different look). The msport x1 has the sport suspension and is $3,000 in the US. Maybe you need to drive a 328 classic to know the difference between the cars you are considering?

Handling is pretty close when compared to last gen 3. The minor elevated ride height keeps it a step behind. X1 Xline (less spirited than M sport) pulled .82G on skidpad, according to MT.

You didn't mention what cargo space you need.
If you don't need the cargo space offered by X1, then go for the 328i. Newer chassis, better options. If you have some sentimental feeling about the E90/E91, then get the X1. I have had sedans all my life (my last BMW was E46 10 years ago), just ordered my first SUV, the X1, because I have a black Labrador now. |

3 series should be a better car overall. Afterall it is a newer design car where x1 is 3 yrs old. Bigger, better chassis and more modern interior design. The only think I hate would be the electronic assist steering.
Also X1 is a better value IMO. |

Congrats! I'm trying to make up my mind between a 328i and an X1 too--leaning toward X1 lately, because I don't like the increased length of the 328i. Would you post pics of your new ride when you get it?

I leaned towards the f30 for a few reasons... But the main one: I wasnt sold on the looks of the X1. I'm single, live alone, yes I play hockey and go skiing, but really, it's big enough. The looks of the car to me is just spectacular.. Yes, for the same price, even less, could have ended up with a fully loaded x1. But I chose to love the car I was driving outside and inside. Here are the pics of the configurator, just missing the black mirror caps, everything else is the exact same: |
