BMW Announces Two Turbo Diesel Engines for US - 180HP 2.0L 4-Cyl and 255HP 3.0L 6-Cyl
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Announces 2.0L 4 cylinder and 3.0L 6 Cylinder Turbo Disesel Engines for US BMW has confirmed that two diesel engines will be making their way to the US. One is a 2.0L single-turbo twinscroll 4 cylinder direct injection diesel engine outputting 180 HP and 280 LB-FT torque, which is identical stats to the N47 engine which currently powers the F30 320d and F10 520. As for consumption and performance, the 320d, for example, achieves an impressive 52.2 combined MPG (US) (40.5 city / 61.8 hwy), with a factory claimed 7.1 secs 0-60 mph. The other is a 3.0L twinscroll 6 cylinder turbo diesel outputting 255 HP (no official torque number yet, but expect 400+ lb-ft torque). Though similar in specs to the engine used in the E90 335d and X5 xDrive35d, this is an all new engine. These engines will be paired with 8 speed automatics and make use of SCR technology (urea based "selective catalyst reduction") to meet the stringent US diesel emission standards. BMW has not yet confirmed which models will receive these engines (nor when), but the 4-cylinder may see duty in a future 220d, 320d, 520d (or perhaps labeled for the NA market as 225d, 325d, 525d), while the 6-cylinder will power models labeled 25d, 30d, or 35d, as well as their counterparts in the xDrive models. No matter the nomenclature, this is wonderful news for the BMW's NA customers! |

I cannot agree more. The only that could make the X1 xdrive more perfect for my needs would be to make it a diesel!!! I would wait for that if someone could confirm it. I know I'll be picking some brains at NAIAS this year!

Drove the N20 X1 today. Have to say I was impressed. Ride quality (on the 17s) over imperfections was harsher than I expected, and I got the goodyears protesting without much effort but still felt right at home in the seat. Back seat was better than I thought less actually getting in which is a bit awkward. Base radio still has subs and sounded good enough for me. Few cheap touches to the interior but the wood really brings the whole thing up and its crazy but I think it may be worth it although the 4k premium package should damn well include it (or real aluminum) if you want it. Sticker claimed 33 highway on the Xdrive model which I assume is a misprint. I plan on waiting at least one more year so hopefully by then we'll know if we'll be seeing a diesel E84 or a manual show up here. I would happily own this car to commute in but I do struggle with the lack of value as the msrp crests 40 without going option wild at all. Black/black rubber manual seats with wood, cold weather and paddles is a nice austere value under 35. Actually I think if I were to go with premium/cold/wood/xenons, might as damn well spend 2k more and just get the 35i, right?

Can't think of any real advantage to the N55 since it's saddled with the old school 6s, instead of the 8s of the 28i. I'd think real world acceleration differences will be minimal and mileage should favor the 2.0t heavily. My wife's 135i generally gets 16mpg in the city, I'm hoping an X1 28i would beat that handily, but of course would prefer the oil burner.

A second faster and I'm assuming a much better soundtrack. 27 vs. 30 hwy isn't exactly a game changer for me. You think real world = wider mpg spread?

So just the handicap of the 35i having the older, less efficient transmission is sizable. I'd guess that real world, there's less than half a second between the two X1's 0-60 and that the 28i gets five or six mpg better. But yes, the 35i will have a better soundtrack. However both petrol motors will sound like a diesel at idle, our N54 135i makes a hideous racket at idle, the DI pump sounds just like a diesel. Speeds beyond 60 will obviously heavily favor the 35i too, but my wife lives less than two miles from her office, so the 135i has largely been wasted on her. 0-60 diff per BMW on F30 is 7/10ths but I'm sure that gap widens as speed builds. 335i 6MT went from 19/28 to 20/30 so we can surmise that 2 hwy improvement was due to a) wind drag or b) BMW making up epa numbers. Unless they changed the gearing I'm pretty sure we can say (b) is largely at play here. I'd love to see F30 335i owners post their 33 mpg highway numbers.

Me, I went back after work and drove the 35. It had Xline, premium, nav, wood that I don't like (different with xline). I confirmed the soundtrack, sounds nice (way better) under throttle. Steering is different- 35 comes with servotronic (opt on 28i, one I drove didn't have)- nice while parking with more boost, seemed to firm up nicely at speed but would take another go round to say if I like it more for sure. Oddly I felt the 35 rode nicer (even with the 18s). While the 28 was impressive the 35 (other than annoying off the line lag even in sport) felt that full second faster to me (what BMW quotes). Brakes also felt stronger and rotors are indeed bigger (don't have the spec tho.) So optioned up- like to like its a 1400 premium. Yes, its the "antiquated" 6 speed (although I way prefer the substantial feeling shifter) and yes gas mileage will be worse. But I think if you're going to option up the 28 to 40+(prem,lighting,cold) you may as well add the refinement and effortless power from the N55. If it had 3 pedals I'd probably do 1 for 2 reverse split of my total vehicle position as its probably as close to a one vehicle solution as I get for around 40. And that is: AWD, quick, agile but not harsh, back seat big enough for kid seat(s) without front seat rider being smashed into the dash, can put kayaks on without getting on a ladder (wife's pilot). Can put 2 golf bags in the trunk without flipping a seat, decent mileage, nice interior.

Just got done playing around with the build option, 28 and 35. Msport, metallic, leatherette, and heated seats. If the engine/transmission differences are ignored, I end up paying $5600 more for the 35. The non-drivetrain improvements are headlights (xenon, adjusting, heated washers) and moonroof. That just doesn't seem worth it.

18s(if you don't go with a line), Power seats with memory, bigger brakes, and servotronic too but yeah if you can live with ette, no roof, manual seats and standard lights its still a pretty big spread and probably not worth it. Isn't it dark in AK like 3/4 of the year, no xenons??

Strangely I'd still go for the 2.8 for its 8spd and eco features. N20 engine was fast enough for me. |

I've had BMW's with both lights, and honestly don't think the zenons are any brighter. Having extensively used halogen, zenon and LED lights for cycling, I can't wait until LED's get more prevalent, they certainly provide cleaner, more effective light than either old styles, with a lot less power consumption and at cheaper prices.
bbg2d, oops, nevermind, I thought the Lighting package came with headlight washers, but it's the cold weather package instead. I was thinking you'd want headlight washers, but you may already have those specced. |

An old thread, but what happened to this exiting news? It is now 10 months later and no sight of an oil burner for the X1 in USA or Canada. I am in the market for a new BMW X1 and would love to get better city mileage than my current '10 X3 (16 mpg). Had 5 oil burners (Audi, VW, Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) while I lived in Europe and their excellent torque and mileage are ideal for city traffic (and highway too!). Hey BMW North America, what is the problem?

I agree with your sentiment, but BMWNA apparently doesn't. The 328d has been confirmed, and I think there's official word that the X3 will be getting the six, but I can't seem to confirm that now. The E-chassis X1 is not getting much support for diesels, the new nav or the 8s transmission with the N55. It will have a short life in the US and be replaced by a fwd based car after this.
On a side note, my wife's short commute and lead foot result in 17 mpg and if I drive it I usually get closer to 19. Not huge differences from your quoted 16 in your X3, but with the N20, you should easily beat your current numbers. Nothing like the four cylinder diesel would allow, but still better. |
