2013 X1 steering electric or hydraulic?
Does anyone know if BMW X1 for 2013 kept the hydraulic steering or if they have changed it electric type? The current model sold in Canada is hydraulic and it is a wonderful steering feel. I'm hoping that BMW kept the same steering for 2013.

I hope so too. I had assumed that would be the case, which is why I'm leaning towards this rather than a F31

having been derived off the E90 platform, it is likely that hydraulic power steering will remain.
also read from the Cdn F30 post that according to bmw maranello, 2013 F30 will have the option for hydraulic PS (vs. electric PS) |

Servotronic is listed as a option on the US 28i and standard on the 35i, thus I would say its still hydraulic.

2012 model in Canada is hydraulic. Has anyone being able to confirm for sure if 2013 model coming is hydraulic or electric steering? I definitely do not want electric as the road feel is reduced.

I am getting a second X1. I found out that the 2013 X1 sDrive (rear wheel drive) definitely has electric steering. The xDrive models in Europe will stay with hydraulic but no one is able to confirm for North America. I decided not to take a chance to purchased a second 2012 X1 for my company car.

I am curious as to how this determination was made.
Call me a skeptic, but this seems hard to believe. Why would BMW go to the trouble of fitting the vehicle with a new steering system, and at that, only for some markets? Quote:

Important point here is to differentiate between servotronic and electronic steering. UK spec Efficient Dynamics versions are fitted with electronic steering and this is nicely weighted with good feedback, servotronic has neither of these characteristics

Electric (not Electronic as you said - though your word choice could be due to your nationality) power steering uses a seperate electric motor to drive the hydraulic system. In theory, an EPS system will have the same variable assistance capabilities as a Servotronic non-EPS system. Quote:
That being said, if what you say is true of the EPS system in the X1, that is somewhat at odds with what others have said of BMW's EPS implementations. As I say above, in theory, the two (Servotronic and Electric) should offer similar steering feel and capability, but many have lamented the loss of the traditional BMW steering to EPS. So if the X1 has turned the tables, then that is a good thing I suppose. Do we have any evidence of EPS on any X1 other than the sDrive20d ED? |

It appears that indeed BMW has switeched to electric steering for 2013 BMW X1 series. That is unfortunate, I hope the great steering feel of the hydraulic steering is not gone now with the EPS.

That's because the X1 xDrive35i has Servotronic as a standard option. That got me thinking that if one orders the Servotronic option for the two N20 models, they will be getting the electric power steering as well.

"Ron, Can you please forward this email to ******* at your Center? N20 sDrive28i has Electric Power Steering (Servotronic is available as an option) N20 xDrive28i has Hydraulic Steering System (Servotronic is available as an option) N55 xDrive35i comes with Servotronic (standard) Servotronic does not make it electric power steering. Thank you investor27.
One question that comes to mind immediately is with regard to Servotronic. That is, how is it that the X1 sDrive28i, a vehicle with EPS, does not have this by default. Here is BMW's (older, acknowledged) word on the topic: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...rvotronic.html "The Servotronic control unit adjusts the amount of steering assistance to suit the speed of the vehicle. An electromagnetic valve accurately controls the amount of force applied by the steering hydraulics, enabling outstandingly precise steering that suits your current driving situation. Conventional power steering systems, by contrast, regulate the power steering in relation to the engine's RPM. The electromechanical steering system EPS uses an electric motor to achieve the same effect." I suppose for the X1 sDrive28i, then, this is no longer the case by default. Furthermore, are we to understand that the 35i model has hydraulic power steering? It was not called out in the coorespondence you quoted. Edit: nevermind I had missed the link above to BMW's official site for the X1 35i. It is electric. |

To be honest with you. Everything I've read during the debut of the X1 have indicated that both X1s with the N20 4-cylinder engine come with the hydraulic steering, with Servotronic being an option. The xDrive35i has electric power steering with Servotronic.
I usually don't trust any salesman or the so called regional managers when it comes to obtaining the correct information. I am very skeptical with his response about the sDrive28 having the electric power steering, especially since he didn't seem to know that the xDrive35i has electric power steering. I just wanted to post something that came from the regional manager in this area for all to see and judge for themselves. The only piece of relevant information (or confirmation) that I got from his response was that the Servotronic option doesn't not cause the hydraulic power steering to be replaced with an electric power steering.
