18" winter tire choices/reviews
Just wondering whether any fellow Canadians are looking at 18" winter rubber and/or whether anyone across the pond can chime in on whether they have already done it and their experiences?

Very happy with them. Superb performance on snow. Also bought a set of chains at the same time but have not needed them. Saying that our conditions never get as bad as what I have experienced in Canada. I keep my chains for the occasional forays into the Highlands here and would probably only need them for hard packed ice on a hill. Last pic is about the worst conditions we can experience in the city.

Thanks Mario - that looks like just another typical 'light' winter day here in Toronto!!
I just ordered a set of Pirelli Sottozero Series II run-flat winter tires (size 225/45 R18 - all 4 tires are the same size) for my wife's X1. Also ordered a nice set of 18" winter wheels (BMW replica wheels built in Germany). The Pirelli's received a very high rating in a recent snow tire comparison report that I read. So this might be another option for you if you want to stick with run-flats (we have the 18" summer run-flats on currently). The Dunlops Mario mentioned also received a high rating. Once I get the tires and wheels mounted in a few weeks, I'll try to upload some pics. |

Mario and Phil, thanks for the responses. Mario, what sizes are you running in the Dunlops? I used the Wintersport M3 setup on my old e46 M3 and love that tire...I don't think there is a tire that handles winter conditions better than that one.
Phil, I guess one option is the 225/45-18 all the way around. I was hoping to go with the staggered set up from the stock 18's if I could, but there is precious little available. |

I looked at getting some winter tyres for my 18's. Having seen the price for winter run flats at that size, I picked myself up off the floor and bought the 17' seteel package from BMW. . .doesn't look bad at all!
Only issue now is that if I have a puncture I have no spare. . .looking at options. BTW Mario - Did I see you near Irvine on Saturday? Silver X1 with winters on passed me. (I was in an old green Merc W124) |
