Cruise control
Folks, anyone here has used the cruise control?
Didn't really found it to be useful. Came standard with my wheels... Last edited by melts; 02-27-2011 at 09:03 AM.. Reason: Add photo |

Whether you like cruise control or not is of course a matter of taste, though I must say I like and use it very often. It may also be that I drive pretty much on highways with speed limits AND radars As compared to my previous car (opel astra), I find the bmw system very well thought of. I particularly appreciate the option of incrementing/decrementing speed by 10km/h. On the negative side: - it took me some time to stop confusing the indicator handle with the cruise control one; - there is no dedicated control light on the pannel which clearly indicates that cruise control is on; the arrow on the tacho is small, has the same colour as the tacho and is not always in the same position (well, that's the whole idea of it, of course); when it happens to me once in a while that I'm not sure anymore of the cruise control, I must take the eyes off the road for a looong time to look for the arrow, and even longer to make sure the arrow is nowhere to be seen! The moving arrow is fancy as hell, but a small green lamp, as in a lot of other cars, would make life sooo much easier!! Last edited by nathan35; 02-27-2011 at 02:00 PM.. |

You have to force push/pull the handle of the cruise control past a point of resistance, much in the same way you have to force the left/right indicator handle to have the indicators blinking permanently.
That's the function I really appreciate about this cruise control! You can go down by say 30 or 40 km/h without having to turn off the cruise control, and then you do feel the famous braking function And oh, there's another thing I like it: it doesn't deactivate when you change gears, which is not common with a manual in other cars. |

Hi melts, I also got the cruise control as a freebie with the "comfort pack" Have used it a few times but in all honesty our roads are generally to congested or windy up north for it to be of much use.
Its my first car with cruise control and I am finding that I don't trust it enough, I somehow feel "out of control". Silly I know.

I tested it a couple times, I liked the design, but I'm not fond of it, because on the one hand as Mario I like to feel in control of the car, and on the other hand, my driving style changes a bit when the cruise is on.
Mainly, I tend to brake far later than I would otherwise, in order not to compromize the cruising speed. Back in NA I would use cruise control all the time on highways, driving at a steady 110 km/h for hours. But everytime some guy would pull over in my lane to pass another car, I would touch the brakes when obviously no other choice was left short of ramming his car ! Would usually scare my passengers substantially. It's totally different when not on cruise... I brake earlier on, keep a safe distance (I'm a trained Defensive Driving Instructor for Pete's sake !)... Anyway, no cruise control for me, period.

That's also why I appreciate enormously the 10km/h decrease option (with braking function ) On the other hand, I also noted that I tend to steadily increase cruising speed over long distance trips, and that's where I find cruise control useful. Anyway, it only makes sense for me when there's virtually no traffic. |
