Oil cooler replacement quote of $2500- legit?
Hello… I’m in Australia. Have never encountered this issue before with any car. My BMW X1 2015 needs a new oil cooler as it’s leaking since three days ago, my mechanic has quoted me $2500 in parts as he says you can only get the cooler as a complete genuine kit as it includes all the needed items. Is this legitimate? Am confused as I don’t understand how a cooler can’t be seperate… thanks

Hi Deanw, that cost seems pretty extreme.
The oil filter housing gasket (which is next to the oil cooler) is a part that tends to fail, and causes quite a leak. This gasket should be replaced at the first sign of failure, but the job should be no more than $400. For reference, the part costs ~$40 and I DIY'ed my OFHG in about two hours including watching YouTube tutorials. However, the oil heat exchanger itself, which is a cast piece of aluminum, should not need replacement unless cracked (which would take some abuse to do). I assume that this piece is the majority of the estimated cost. I'd ask your mechanic to clarify what exactly needs to be replaced. |
