Canada has lower rates of death by firearms than the US, our gun laws are pretty strict. I am a gun owner, you need to take a government approved course and then submit test results and application to the RCMP for background checks. The application includes having spouses and references signing off that know you are applying and that they are ok with it. Our storage laws are also strict, you must keep firearms locked in a safe or a rack with trigger locks and ammunition must be stored separately and locked up. Having said that the vast majority of gun crimes are not committed by legal gun owners (both Canada and the US), so we hear lots of rhetoric about banning guns in Canada, to that I say Murder is already banned and that doesn't seem to be working.

I have one and so does my wife. If you look at the chart I posted I think is shows that 25 in 100 Canadians own firearms vs 89 in the US. We don't own as many guns as the US but we own a lot more than most Canadians realize.

Has something changed since 2013? I lived in the GTA for 11 years (02-13) and it was commonly discussed by my peers on how they weren't allowed to purchase handguns and only long guns used for hunting purposes. Obviously there are always extenuating circumstances where people can get approval but generally speaking most citizens were unable to purchase a handgun. |

You could definitely own handguns before 2013. I own the trifecta - handgun (Kimber 1911 Raptor II stainless), rifle (Remington 700 with a 5R barrel chambered in .308), and a shotgun (Benelli Supernova in 12G). Figure I'm covered for most of the disciplines...just have to get out this summer and put some rounds through the shotgun for the first time - my latest acquisition. |

A handgun, due to the storage requirements, would almost never ever be ideal for defense. Unless said person was willing to give you 10 minutes to go down, unlock the safe, remove the trigger lock, unbox your ammo, load a magazine or two, ready the gun, and come back. Plus, I think most people would be a pretty lousy shot with a handgun in that circumstance and likely wouldn't hit anything...or at least not the target, and that may cause even more harm due to unintended placement of bullet...may endanger own family or the neighbour. Whereas a 12G is a little more forgiving...but still, doesn't disperse that much in close quarters, so have to have some reasonable aim at 10-15 feet. Nevertheless, my firearms would not be my go-to. I'd first try to see if my family and I can get out of the house safely. If we can't, it's pretty much a guarantee we aren't getting to the basement where they are stored, so I've got a baseball bat under the bed and I guess I'd go for my best Babe Ruth impression. |

As soon as the police released the guys name I was thinking here we go. All the anti-immigration, islamophobic, alt-right jackasses will be on their soap box blaming Trudeau, etc.

But to be fair, whenever a shooter is a white male the far-leftists do the exact same. Basically, folks on both extremes are the exact same people. Their minds work exactly the same. Reactionary, emotion-driven, divisive, etc. |

In general there is so much unrest in the States because our population is very diverse. That leads to countless differences in opinion on every political/social topic.
Canada has 10% of the population of us and is overwhelmingly White, Asian, and Indian. Plus, the majority of people live in just three metros (GTA, Montreal, and Vancouver). |

That is not what the chart actually says. It says there are 89 guns per 100 Americans. Not that 89 out of 100 own guns. Most American gun owners have several guns. I am fully willing to bet that is the same in Canada, and that in the USA less than 1/3 of Americans actually own guns. I have 5 myself.

I am glad you enjoyed Toronto! I spent about 19 years there and saw the changes year after year. It's a great City but certain areas are just polluted with this behavior. I absolutely love Toronto for its multiculturalism, food and endless activities to do but the violence is becoming more frequent.
