I ride a 54 and I have to remove the front wheel and the seat post to fit it upright in my X3. I didn't even try it in my X1.

can this be installed on any model. i have a 2013/2014 model and was looking forward to having a hitch installed. I saw the model in europe and thats when i decided to buy. But the US version didnt come with a hitch. Even the US advertisement had a bike rack in it. I was cheated. Glad to see that you can finally install one. Can it be done by yourself ? I am quite handy. I dont have the moon roof version

I've got a post up on here, I think in the DIY section. Take a look and see if you can find it. This is far easier of an install as there are no electronics to speak of. And there are plenty of YouTube videos on it as well. Look for my post and all the details are in there.

It's a lot easier than having to do stuff to the bumper crash guard |

I agree with vstolpner. The hitch with bike rack is much more versatile. The hitch install is easy and the cost of one is inexpensive. I find the hitch bike racks to be easy to use and store in the garage when not in use. I'm 6 ft tall but think that a roof rack bike mount would be a huge PITA.
Moreover, I use my hitch with a cargo carrier. It kicks up the practicality of a hatch immensely. I've carried a bunch of very large arborvitaes in the spring that would not have been possible otherwise. On another occasion, several bales of straw that would have been a complete mess if I hauled it inside the car. I know some people like the hidden hitches but I think the hitch looks good on my car. |

Tried my Yakima Trunk Bike Rack when I had an Outback, but the rack would slide down the top support straps. A friend owns a bike shop and had him fir it same problem. We tried a Saris Superbones, I really like this one. Solid, easy setup only problem was upper support straps hooks were so thick the rubbed on the body of the car in the gap. So this was a no-go. I decided to go with a hitch mount. Got hitch installed and went to my friend and tried Yakima and Tule, liked the fit close to car and would tilt. Girlfriend had trouble with tilting with bikes on rack. Tried Saris Super-Clamp, sits further from car put can open without tilting, solid, at 150 mph bike stay put, one bolt with lock holds firm to hitch (also integrated cable lock for bike), weighs 26 pounds she can put it on or take it off by herself and wheel holders are about 18-19" from the ground. This is what worked best for use.

I just picked up one of these BMW rear carriers. Pretty stoked to see how it works in the spring. Design seems solid.
On a side note, you can fit a size large fat bike in the back with the seats down. You just need to remove the front wheel. |

I bought the Yakima DoubleDown 4-bike carrier towards the end of last season. Only got to use it twice but overall it feels like a great mix between cost and features
I added the deadbolt 2" stainless steel/brass hitch lock to it so I can lock it to the X1. Total was $224 shipped from etrailer.com |
