Front Driveshaft Question
2013 X1 35i
50,300mi I noticed some grease being thrown from the front propshaft on my X1. In the image below, you can see it slung on the underbody. In addition to this, the joint on the transfer case side is very stiff, while the joint at the diff side is very smooth and free. So, I thought this would be a simple driveshaft replacement as it seems this one failed. I took it in (under CPO warranty) to have it looked at. The tech told my advisor that the shafts are heavily greased at the factory and that this is normal - the grease slings off of all of them. Also, it is normal for one u-joint on this shaft to be stiffer than the other. (For reasons unclear) They pulled a front propshaft for an X5 out of the parts dept to show the amount of grease that is in the u-joint on a brand new shaft. Now, I don't suspect any foul play, and I know they welcome any warranty work I can bring their way ($$$). I'm just curious if this makes sense? I'm having a hard time thinking of a reason why one u-joint would feel like it is ungreased, and the other feel perfect. I figured this would be a no-brainer warranty replacement. Thanks |

While my experience with BMWs may be thin, it's not uncommon for a u-joint to sling grease, especially a grease-able joint. But I don't think you've got a lot of grease getting slung.
I would also caution as to what defines a good or bad joint. In fact, unless seized, a perfectly new joint will feel stiffer (i.e., less play) than one with more wear.

I don't think I've heard of many BMW driveshafts failing either. Diffs? All day. |
