X1 2013 - New tires - HELP
Hi guys,
I am by no means an expert so I hope you can help me out with what might be a simple question. My current tires that my X1 2013 came with has gone about 30k miles now and BMW recommended me to change them. They want to sell with one of the following incl. mounting, balancing and tax: 225/45R18 Continental CONTIPROCONTACT SSR (BMW) BW Final Price $1,188.12 225/45R18 Pirelli CINTURATO P7 A/S RFT (BMW) BW Final Price $1,249.85 Which one to pick? - Or should I go somewhere else? If somewhere else, please recommend a chain or store. Im in the central NJ area. THANKS! Tom |

We just bought 225/45ZR-18 MICHELIN PILOT SUPER SPORT XL from Tire Rack for $900 shipped, less $70 rebate. (The rebate just ended yesterday). It will cost me $100 to mount them at my local wheel place. They have done a good job for us so I'll toss them some business even though I did not buy tires from them.
These are not run flats, neither are our winter tires. Also bought from Tire Rack. Many folks buy from tires from Tire Rack and have a local place mount them - they also have recommended installers. FWIW We ran the OEM Pirelli and they were okay. Over all I was NOT impressed with the wear. 13k miles and they had 4-5/32 left. A member here just used them for his lease return. Ditch the runflats.
Also do summer and winter tires with separate wheels if you need to switch for seasons Summer: Conti DW Mich PSS Vred Sessanta/Vorti Winter: Nokian Hakka

Those aren't bad prices, but tirerack is probably $200 cheaper, even after mounted/balanced. And there are more choices (Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin) than the Conti and Pirelli. There are some very vocal people on the forums that decry RFT, but there are arguments that support them, too. Read before you decide. |

If you do want to keep the safety of having run-flats Bridgestone Driveguards are some great all-seasons with a ride that rivals regular non-runflat tires. I've had them for 10K miles and love them on my X1!

I use RFT's on m 328d and my X5 3.5i. The M6 wears PSS's and the i8 is about to be outfitted in PSS's as well. I am almost done burning the stock Bridgestone's off! |

I've had the DW's and DWS's. Both are great tires. For the price they are hard to beat. The only nag I have with them are the slighter softer sidewalls than I prefer. Which translates to less sharp turn in. But its pretty minute.

Hi. This is my first post.
I was interested to read about replacing tyres on the X1. My past two cars have been 3 series so when it came to winter I swapped my summer tyres over for winter tyres. This time I thought rather than swap over the wheels I would look at all season tyres. My mate owns a Tyre outlet so I always go there for tyres. When I said about replacing the tyres with all seasons he asked if the car had X drive. Slightly puzzled I asked him why? He went on to tell me that one of his friends who owns a transmission repair company in a local city had advised him that most of the problems they have came across with BMW Xdrive vehicles were down to wrong tyre choice. Seemingly the system is sensitive to wrong size tyres/wheels being fitted and he recommended sticking to BMW approved tyres/wheels. My first thought was this was just a sales plot to get more expensive tyres but my friend has always seen me right in the past and wouldn't try to do me. This is a bit of a bummer as it looks like I am going to have to stick to BMW approved winter tyres and summer tyres which cuts down the choice a good bit. My friend did say he would fit any tyres I wanted but if it all went pear shaped transmission wise I had be warned and on my head be it! |

If you really want a set of OEM tires, I'd be happy to sell you the like-new set that's sitting in my garage right now. But personally I'd opt for getting a 2nd set of wheels and going with winter tires now and summer tires starting April/May.

The new 06s are supposed to remedy the horrid sidewall on the DWS.

In fact, xdrive is actually an awd system which can handle some minor variation in tire sizes front to rear. Some others can't. Not that you'd be running staggered tires anyway.

In Jersey i'd be tempted to run a winter tyre myself, if not the DWS work well in snow for the first 15 to 20,000 clicks but then as the tread wears they lose bite, there's no substitute for winter rubber.
The Conti DW (not DWS) is often excellent value. The DWS i ran on my Saab, really nice looking tyres with aq nice ride but yeah, sidewall a little soft. |

+1 for tire rack
Suggest you look into their site, look at their reviews and the tire ratings. Based on that you should be able to find the exact tire to fit your needs and driving style. |

Tire rack is good, but there might be a performance wheel shop out there that can give you better prices. I know the wheel shop I deal with gives me Michelin PSS tires for about 75% of the cost from tire rack. Do a bit of searching on google. If not, TR is pretty good with pricing and usually have a good stock which is very important as well.
