I work at a BMW dealer. The F chassis cars have the key you are referring to. I've never seen an X1 key with that design.

This is a still from a YouTube review of a 2015 X1 sdrive28i. As you can see, the remote is different from the remote I have for my 2013 X1 xdrive28i. My current remote is the same as I had with my 2008 328xi coupe. Luckily, you work in a dealership so I can get an explanation. It's been bugging me.

I have yet to see an x1 come in with that key. We havent gotten any new ones yet (late model production) so maybe they changed it later in the year

Maybe he had the old key in the pocket, thus he was able to start the car
