The thing with Dinan is, warranty. They also don't have stuff you have to plug in. You bring your car to the dealer and they upload the software into the ECU. It's painless and reliable power.
Granted, Dinan will give you less power than JB4.

If adding a JB4 and the additional extra power can be shown to be partially responsible for hurting the drivetrain, it's not as innocent as you make it sound and isn't explicitly covered by Magussen Moss. BMW has become pretty clear about (accurately or not) stating the max torque capabilities of their transmissions as being pretty close to the stock limits, which puts most tunes well outside of spec, potentially allowing BMW to deny transmission issues on clearly tuned cars. Again, since Dinan covers these things, it's why some people go that route. It's all a matter of risk, neither choice is right or wrong.

I am also looking for the Dinan stage 1 mostly because of the warranty. I gave a try on June 9th to the local Dinan rep and he answered me that no stage 1 is planned... I hope by the high number of X1 sales in USA and CAN, that Dinan stops sitting on their two hands and produce the freaking stage 1! |

Steve has already said via podcasts and etc that no software will be made available for any N20 engine. This include the huge number of sales of X1s and F3x chassis 328s.
His reason: There is no point on upgrading the N20 to the power levels of the N54/55 when that engine is already available in those cars. There's too few people who want to upgrade power on the N20, mostly because they've bought that engine for it's fuel economy and not big power numbers. Not his exact words, but that sums up what he said pretty accurately. And in ways I agree. The amount of money it would cost him to R&D tunes for N20 engines would be greater than the money incoming from sales of the product. It may seem like there is a lot of interest for a Dinan tune for N20 engines, but in the grand scheme of things, we the people on these forums makes up for a very tiny percentage of N20 ownership.

I don't think that was his point.

That said, the Dinan alone puts out 400 torque. So, yes, I could very well have had to pay that repair if it was JB4, etc, putting out even more torque. Best part is I don't HAVE to wonder or worry about it To the OP: unfortunately, a lot of times they don't make tunes for the smaller engine because they figure that if someone is looking for power they will start with the more powerful engine. I wish that weren't true, but it seems to be the case. I hope they do for the N20, it is a good engine. |

If you want the more power just trade in your car for the bigger engine and you will have more power and a warranty. If it were 500 dollars it might make sense for someone to buy a dinan upgrade for the 28 but at 2k the number of people willing to buy it is probably a handful at most.

What about for sdrive models coz they don't have N55 on them and some of those countries (Australia) where 35i variant for X1 isn't available at all? I'm just asking I opted for sdrive18d due to my licence restrictions and I didn't want to go AWD but now it'd be great if I could tune ECU for extra power without worrying about warranty

In Aust. you could ask BMW if they install DINAN with Warranty. Good luck there. HARTAGE recommend tdi-tuning.co.uk for Diesels, which is the one I'm currently interested in. The Chip for yours gives you more power than the 20d and the 20d is plenty of power for Aust. conditions. It all gets back to Warranty and it's many opinions and comments on Chips, like easy to put on and take off before servicing. They wont know etc. While you can get Product Warranty. With BMW it's your decision to decide/work out to do. If you want to comment/discuss more about your situation I suggest starting another thread including other Diesel matters I would be happy to reply to. |

Dinan is AT your dealer. No need to send your car to california. The dealer will do the work and Dinan flips the bill.
