X5 vs My X1...
Was at Home Depot today and parked next to a new X5. Wow! I guess I hadn't realized just how much smaller the X1 is than the X5! It was a HUGE difference. Made me really appreciate just how much more car like the X1 is and how that honkin' X5 must handle like a boat (never driven one and I would guess people don't buy them for their handling). I always admired how WIDE X5 rear wheels/tires are though. Love the look.
To me the E84 X1 looks just as modern on the outside as the brand new F15 X5. BMW really did a wonderful job with the X1...couldn't be happier with it!

I can't comment on how the newest X5 handles as I've never driven one, but I had a 2006 X5 (last year of the first generation) and it handled really good, easily as good as my X1. I did however have the sports package with the tighter suspension on the X5 while my X1 does not have the sports package or the M package.
However, that said, even with the sports suspension, the X5 ride was much smoother over rough pavement than my non-sport X1. I know it looks like a huge vehicle, but it really is a more advanced vehicle. You get much more for the extra 20-25k than just size. I really do miss the X5 as it was much more of a car than my X1. The only time I don't miss it is when I go to the gas pump. In the end, that is the main reason why I got rid of it. 14 mpg is just not acceptable when gasoline is $3-4 per gallon. But it really is amazing how well that car handled considering how high it was off the ground and how much it weighed. It really did have sports car like handling around turns. You could lean it into a turn like you would a sports car, and it would stay flat. It's just one of those marvels of BMW. And I'm not just blowing smoke here.....my daily driver for the 3 years prior to getting the X5 was an Acura NSX. The new one is starting to look a little bloated though, so I'm not sure if it still handles as good as the old one did. The old one was closer to the size of the current X3. Thanks for the comments Eric! I would like to take a X5 for a spin some day, they sure do look nice. It is amazing how BMW does seem to be able to work their "magic" on almost their entire vehicle line-up. They often handle better and perform better than their #s on paper would suggest.

I totally agree on how modern the X1 still looks compared to the F15. I feel as if they look more similar now than against the previous gen X5. The F15 and E84 tail lights are strikingly similar. I guess that's a good thing...the X1 won't feel as dated if the F15 is just starting it's cycle.

The new X5 handles surprisingly well for how big and tall it is. Most people would shit their pants long before reaching it's limits

Even if I did think that a South Carolina auto worker was capable as German auto worker. I have a hard time paying huge amounts of money for a car made by workers who are being paid 20 dollars and hour as those paid over 60 dollars an hour. If you are getting discount labor you shouldn't be charging super premium prices.

What is it you do? Do you think your EU counterparts are somehow better at it than you? I've worked in the US and Germany and while I think the average professional German works harder in fewer hours, it's not easy to blanket it like that, nor tie higher wages (ignoring cost of living, taxes, etc) to higher quality work.
I've seen this argument presented for years on the VW boards, and continuously, the Mexican made Golfs score better on both initial and long term quality than the German made ones. BMW hasn't been as clean about building the same model in various locations, but I do know that the South African assembled 3ers have scored just as well as the German made ones. |

The car companies have shown that when they are forced to, they can make cars that get better gas mileage, and they can do that without sacrificing performance. The new X5 is both much faster AND gets better gas mileage than my old 2006 X5. That, and it's much bigger as well (which was not necessary IMO). I'd be shocked if the next X1 gets less than 40 mpg on the highway, and it will most likely also have better acceleration than the current one does. That seems to be the trend... |

Anyway I would rather my money go to workers making a decent living, gets a lot of vacation time, and has great benefits. I talked to some workers at the BMW plant when I visited. I guess they are happy making what they make because South Carolina is a pretty depressed area. One of the poorest states in the country and I think they have the lowest high school graduation rates. I really wish my BMW was made in Munich. I didn't realize Lepzig wasn't in Bavaria. I guess another way of lowering costs. |

LOL...I started quite the thread here apparently. For what it is worth I also had a '99 M-Coupe built here in the states. Best car I have ever owned and also the most reliable (never 1 issue over the 5 years of ownership).

*For me the X1 is as close to a 1 series hatchback as I can get
*also very happy Spartanburg M Coupe owner (and they used to throw a hell of a party every Labor Day weekend) *The days of getting a BMW car made by elves deep in the Black Forest are over...

Wait a second there are three M Coupe owners posting in this thread? They only made about 1000 of them didn't they? You guys are talking about the z-3 M Coupe, correct? Weird.

That's what you get for getting the girl edition.
There were no German made Z3's. The M's got a German VIN because of the German sourced part content, but they were still made by the halfwits you're so scared of. There were 6,200 total Z3 M Coupes for the world and I think 2.600 for the US. Only about 630 of those were US S54 cars though, but I think all three of us had S52 cars. I sold mine after 143k miles, many track sessions and zero mechanical issues. The new owner threw a turbo on it, finally did the rear subframe modifications and it's still going strong. Interesting sidebar, when I worked in Germany, my colleagues hated the Z3 M's because they were geared primarily for the US, near redline at 155 mph and had a tiny gas tank, 14 gallons or so. They were only good for about 150 miles on the autobahn because of that, sort of limiting their functionality. I still got to drive a Euro motor S52 over there, that motor always seemed more raw than the later S54 and I would have loved to have had one over there and mine at home. |
