The energy to drive the compressor has to come from somewhere. The only energy sources are the engine and the battery. The battery only stores energy from the engine (via the alternator). So yes, it will affect the gas mileage.

That said, that surplus is not enough to run an AC continuously, even if it might when you brake. Yes, running an AC makes a significant difference to gas mileage. Recirculating the air instead of cooling fresh air can make a big difference. Leave the smelly kids at home. For the heater, it depends on how much of the car engine heat can be used for heat exchange, but in general it's far less than the AC uses. With gas prices going up, it's just a matter of time before we get better insulated cars, with thermopane windows, well insulated doors and roofs, top- and bottom-mounted exhaust fans, and other ways to keep the cabin temperature stable. |

Just over 1k miles. Eco Pro off, ASS on. Half highway, half city. Two and sometimes three passengers and I'm not driving very conservatively-
About what I expected. Will try Eco Pro mode when I have a few more miles on it. |

Thanks for the pics.
So new data says I might be wrong with thinking I'm already at the floor. I'm about 3/4 through my current tank, and my mpg had been stuck on the 21.9 mpg from last week's ski trip. Has not moved all week driving to work. I just took two friends out for lunch who wanted to see the new X1. So - of course - I had to drive in Sport mode to show off the car. 15 minutes on highway there & same 15 minutes back. The mpg now reads 21.5 mpg. Sigh. My true mileage is probably closer to the 20.8 mpg that I recorded un-reset over the first 2K miles. That was last September in Europe. And it was warm. Will see what this weekend's ski trip will show running in default Comfort mode. |

Teleskier and HBWT, I am wondering do you guys have a iDrive (Technology Package)? The reason I asked you the question is that guys who do not have iDrice may talk different mpg number. For X1 with no iDrive, the average mpg displayed on the cluster console (see photos posted by leatherpants) may be read-only (is not resetable). So, the mpg number you mentined may be the average mpg since you picked up your car, rather than average mpg for a trip. Although I have iDrive, I never reset the mpg displayed on cluster console and I got 21.3 mpg, similar as yours. The one (33 mpg) I reported is based on the one displayed on iDrive screen.
For X1 with iDrive, there are two trip computers: one is under Menu -> Vehicle Info -> Onboard Info (the same info also displayed on the cluster console. You can reset the average speed and mpg). The other one is under Menu -> Vehicle Info -> Trip Computer (you can reset trip computer. The info is displayed on iDrive only. The mpg number I reported is based this one). Me too. The numbers I have reported were manual calculations for one or more consecutive tanks of gas. I think you need to have a significant number of miles on the trip computer for it to be half-way accurate. I have about 50 miles on my current tank and the mpg readout still changed by 0.9 mpg just on the 7 mile drive home from work. Even for a full tank, with over 200 miles, I have found the computer mpg is about 0.5 mpg higher than a manual calculation.

Temperature also have a big impact on mpg. I was getting 25.5 mpg average over the last few months in NJ; 90% hwy driving (not flat road however, lots of ups and down). Last few days the temperature raise up to 50F I can do 29 mpg on the same road. That's with winter blend fuel so hopefully it can do higher with summer blend.
I have ECO mode on when cruising and average speed at 70-75 mph on hwy. |

My oil temp gage on my E93 335 doesn't even start until 160 degrees and when warm runs min 190-220. I can drive 10 minutes in the winter before it even moves above 160 so oil temp definitely effects short drives. When its in the 30's my lawn mower won't start because the oil is like tar.

MPG
Just have 800 miles on my sDrive28i. I reset everything on each new tank. My first tank was all town driving and I got a little over 24, and the computer said 23. Went for a scenic drive on the second tank. The roads were hilly, curves and switchbacks. Speeds ranged from 75 down to 15. The computer told me I was getting a tad over 31, and I wasn't using ecodrive. The first tank I did use ecodrive.
I also feel that there should be some acceleration when using ecodrive with out taking the pedal to the floor. I'll get a better feel for the ecodrive next weekend when I will make a trip for a total of 500 miles; as well as mpg. I'm using Shell premium gasoline. |

For what it's worth ...
You're looking at the results of two long trips. As you can see from the average speed, it was virtually all highway driving with minimal stop and go at each end. I stopped calculating manually long ago, although in the past I found the accuracy of the computer to vary with the computer's indicated mpg always inflated.
So if you're wondering, yes - I continue to be disappointed by the X1's fuel economy. A could achieve close to these numbers in my Subaru, with 25% more displacement and half the gear ratios. Factor in the higher cost of premium, and I'm actually paying more for gas. For the record, the EPA ratings on the Subaru (2009 model) were 20/26. Last edited by HotRodW; 03-17-2013 at 04:10 PM.. |

So I just returned from my ski trip. This time it was slightly closer NH than VT, but still all highway. This time:
It was freeing. I actually drove my car. It actually responded when I stepped on the gas pedal (unlike eco mode). It got 21.7 mpg. Whereas I got 21.9 in eco-mode. I decided this was somewhat good news, in that at least I can drive the car without eco mode and not pay even more of a mpg penalty. However every time I see someone else's trip computer picture, I feel that every X1 is getting better mileage than mine. Argh!! Not happy. |

Yeah, BMW lost me on this one. If it got 33 (or close) or they brought the 2L d they would've had me again. Drove a '14 Forester w/6MT and that will be my CR-Vs replacement with very little doubt. Wish I could have a few things N/A with the manual, but I'll live, its a really solid piece and I'm giving Subie a virtual high five for continuing to offer row your own option. I'd probably get the XT if it had one but I'll save a nice chunk of change up front plus gas, maintenance, etc- I think this car rated at 29 can actually meet or exceed this on long hwy stretches without any eco slo gimmickry. Not quick (don't expect to challenge any X1s) but not a dog either, nice upgrades over the previous MY.

I have just under 300 miles on my xdrive. I left the house today and drove six miles into town to the office. Left the office and took the interstate 25 miles to a meeting. Returned the same way. ASS and Eco pro off. Easy on the gas most of the time. 24.5 mpg.

Teleskier - I am having the exact same problem with my 2013 X1. I am lucky to get 17 MPG, even with the EcoPro on and following all of the proper driving techniques. To say that I am irritated is an understatement; I have nearly 1,800 miles on it now and I've seen no improvement following the 'breaking-in period' (if that even exists). I would have gotten a different car if I had this information up front. Perhaps we just got lemons, as it doesn't sound like everyone is having this issue.

No more ecomode
I've just quit using ecomode. With the winter grade premium I was getting 24-25 mpg city, and 31 on the hwy averaging 70mph on a 700 mile trip. Now the summer grade premium is in and mileage has dropped to 22-23 mpg. I've got 6600 miles on car so it's broken in.
I'm not happy with the city mileage, but I'm not unhappy either. |

I just got back from picking up my X1 in Munich and driving through Germany, Belgium and Holland. It's still in break-in, so I expected my mpg would be lower than once fully broken-in.
Over a total of 946 miles, my best tank was 31.3 mpg. This was driving 75-85 mph in Belgium and Holland. My worst tank was 23.8 that included Autobahn driving up to 105 (ok, maybe 110 a few times to get out of the way of cars coming up fast from behind) and a couple of laps of the Nurburgring (keeping within the 4500 rpm break-in limit). There was also some mixed city driving with ASS on. Very pleased with my mileage so far. Hopefully it will get better once it's fully broken in. |
