I was getting around 23 mpg (mostly highway). Then recently, I took a trip, No eco mode, ASS off, and I got an average of 29mpg. I've got about 4k on the odometer.
Someone told me that BMW's run rich to help break-in, then lean out. So the difference is more dramatic after break-in. I don't know if that is true or not. But I'm getting much better gas mileage now. |

Another data point. My sDrive has a shade under 3K miles on it. I had to take a freeway trip yesterday. I reset the trip computer and set off. Driving conservatively without EcoPro but with ASS (which only helped at the lights on the way to the freeway) I managed to get 33.1 MPG according to the computer.
The only downside is that driving that way was a major bore. A beat up looking early 90's Civic passed me for example. If you drive it like a Prius you can hit the EPA numbers. If you drive it like a BMW you'll be way off but probably enjoy yourself much more. I drove aggressively coming back and by the time I got home I'd pushed the MPG down to 22. But I came back mostly surface streets because the freeway going the other way backup up due to an accident. |

I've been lurking here for awhile. I guess it's time I weighed in on the 'disappointing' mileage I have been getting from my xDrive 28i (~2000 mi). Based on three consecutive tank fulls of pure city driving I got 16.2 mpg. This was using the paddle shifters in sport mode. After that I decided to see what Eco-Pro in D would get me. After a week and half a tank full (all I could stand) I got 17.0 mpg. That is a hell of a long way from 22 mpg! My city driving may be more severe than most (no freeway, stoplights/signs every 3-5 blocks, 21 mph avg) but it's still disappointing.
My highway milage isn't much more encouraging. I've taken two trips since new. The first one was two tanks at about 1000 mi on the odometer. I got 27.3 mpg at 75-80 mph (indicated) in Eco-Pro. The second trip was 240 miles at a steady 75 mph indicated (72 mph actual), also in Eco-Pro. This yielded 28.0 mpg. Yes, it's winter with winter blend gas, but I can't see these numbers going up by more than 2 mpg when it warms up. I don't see any way to get the EPA numbers. Other than that, I love my X1! |

Brand new car, less than 600 miles. Driving with a heavy foot and three other passengers has yielded an average of 24/25 mpg (trip meter reset w/ each tank of 92 octane, ethanol-free gas), Eco-pro off and ASS on.
Pretty sure I could improve on those numbers after car is broken in and I drive conservatively (right!) in Eco-pro mode. |

I'm also not using Eco-Pro. I find it frustrating. My Fiat could take off from a red light faster than this car with the Eco-Pro on. I did not buy a BMW to drive it like a granny. Would I like the mileage to be better? Yes. But then I would have bought a different car. |

I am very frustrated with the extremely poor gas mileage I am seeing with this car! I've now done three highway-only VT ski trips - all have the same poor 21 mpg. No matter how I drive (eco vs comfort, but hardly ever sport) or what fuel I use (Euro premium vs US premium vs US regular) or how many of my usual eco driving tricks I use (coasting in N down every hill or stop, drafting behind trucks, auto start/stop at EVERY stop)... I only see 20-22 mpg!! Pathetic! I NEVER see the 33 mpg hwy that BMW and the EPA promise for this car. 21 mpg is ridiculous - this is not a large roomy car or SUV! It feels like I'm driving a Suburban - the way it hoggishly sucks down all the gas in seconds! Every time I look down - the tank has less - I bet you could actually watch the needle move down as you drive. Each Vermont ski trip now takes TWO tank refills - one each way?!?! With the TDI I never thought twice about driving anywhere. I'd fill the TDI up before the trip, get there and back, and have enough to last the rest of the week. The X1 range seems only 300 miles, versus 700-800 miles range on TDI. Now I ask: is this free VT ski ticket worth it since the crappy X1 will take $80-$100 just to get me there and back. This is making me pissed!! I didn't think the X1 would be as good as a VW TDI in mileage performance, but only slightly (33mpg vs 50mpg) worse. 21 mpg is pathetic for a 'smaller 4-cyl' eco-car that is supposed to be good on mileage. Here are my two screenshots - the first one is for the ENTIRE first 2K miles I put on the car in Europe. The second is one was reset to capture an entire recent VT ski trip (this one like the other three ski trips - pulled out all the eco stops - eco mode the whole trip, premium gas, coasted in N down every hill, drafted 3ft behind tractor trailers for sections, auto-off on every stop, watching the mpg needle like a hawk to minimize my foot push, etc). Did no good... I only get 21mpg no matter what I do. Also keep in mind that when I measure my mpg manually (miles/gallons filled up), I always see less actual mpg than the above computer screens show (up to 1 mpg less than shown on the screen). I'd be OK if I got 30-something pulling out all the tricks... but nothing I can do gets the car anywhere near 30+ mpg. I feel scammed. What are you seeing for a complete highway trip? For a whole gas tank? Last edited by Teleskier; 03-05-2013 at 11:03 AM.. |

That was all computer calculated so if you don't believe the CPU you can discount! I just found my photo and it say 947 miles, 29.7MPG, 62.2MPH. The car can do it. I can't tell you why your car can not but I'd start to wonder if something was screwy in my drive train. |

I have 4700 miles and average is 22.4 but 85% city. Two highway trips at 75-85 and got over 30 on both trips combined 600 miles and I ran pretty hard with a lot of passing. If someone's getting 21 hwy there is something wrong with their X1.

I have been averaging 21.3 in my 35i with mostly city driving back and forth to my office. Haven't taken it on a highway trip yet..

That sounds right around the target combined mileage rating of the 35i.

My average speed has been 24.5... So I am excited to see what it does on the highway mileage wise

I am coming on 3K miles, in Los Angeles driving with my average speed now just over 30mph. Yup. And the tank average - not reset since i got the X1 - is just under 27mpg. I think the OP has an X1 with a problem...

I'm seeing 27.6 mpg with an average speed of 50 mph. The current tank is averaging over 28 mpg. I'm getting about 400 miles out of a tank with some range left.
Sdrive, no ECO at all, moderate driving at 75-80 on the freeway, mostly highway miles. Last edited by txchas; 03-07-2013 at 01:24 PM.. |

So what can I do to figure this out? Is it me or is it my car?
Do I bring the car back to the dealer for a checkup? Worth doing? What should I ask them to check for?
Scanning the previous posts, a lot of folks don't mention if they are sDrive or xDrive, for those that did it seems people are seeing:
Other thoughts from the posts :
For example, here is a frequent eco-mode scenario for me. A gap has opened between me and the car ahead. In Boston, this means I will quickly have 5-then-10-then-15 cars cut in to fill in this suddenly appearing void. This never happens in my 50mpg TDI. But Fine. I take a deep breath. I remind myself that I am in eco-mode, like a Prius, and gaps will happen. I will SLOWLY try to close the gap, in anemic eco-mode fashion. When in eco-mode, I am trying to be a miser with the gas pedal, watching the mpg needle and how the car reacts. Here's the typical play by play:
Is this your X1 experience? In order to get the car to move AT ALL, the needle ALWAYS drops to be pegged below the 12mpg scale cutoff. I see this 100% of the time I watch the needle (which is most of the time). Any car movement at all = pegged below 12mpg. Not a JUMP ahead mind you - a simple anemic CREEP ahead. Equals pegged below 12mpg. It bothered me that BMW chose the wrong scale for the needle. Why start at 50mpg and end at 12mpg, when all I ever see is 28mpg max and 6mpg min. The scale seemed off for the real-life values seen. Or maybe the scale is right after all, and there is something wrong with my car? Any ideas? Is this what you see and experience in *YOUR* X1? |

There is no 3.8. There is no 2.8 either. 28i = 2.0 l 35i = 3.0 l As for comparing to a TDI, that's a whole different kettle of fish. See the second paragraph of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throttle_response for some explanation of why it can differ so much, and diesels being more responsive. |

My two hwy trips in sdrive M sport were both in Eco Pro mode and I averaged over 30 at 75-85. I don't think it matters that much at those speeds because you are in overdrive or 8 with or without Eco Pro.

I think you do have an issue with the car. I would take it to the dealer and compare yours with the one on the lot just like yours power-train wise. Compare the MPG needle readings while cruising on highway. I wonder that the injector(s) might be slightly leaking causing poor gas mileage. |
