The 8sp shifts very quickly via the paddles. It's a terrific transmission. Very little delay. 6sp is slower but still not terrible...about on par with most 2008-2011 cars.
If you ordered a 35i you're getting the old 6sp, don't get your hopes up with dealer ineptitude. |

If you want to manually shift, get the paddles. Manually shifting with the stalk is awkward in comparison IMHO (my parents don't have paddles in their 328i). |

What I'm curious about, though, is how bad is the car programming about actually executing the shifts the driver initiates in certain conditions. My last auto car was a 2001 325i and it would usually shift decently but, say, down shifting going into a turn would suffer long delays before an actual down shift occurred (after I initiated it)....like the car thinks too much. Outside of a money shift, I wouldn't expect delay. Is that the case?

If you drive the car as if it is a manual, you will have no complaints. Since, I am used to driving manuals, instinctively I ease up on the throttle when I initiate shifts. The transmission does a great job of rev matching IMO. I have heard people complaining of surging when shifting and I believe these people are keeping a constant or even full throttle pressure when shifting. If keeping constant/full throttle pressure, the transmission does best shifting on its own in my opinion and does a damn good job in Drive Sport mode. |

I ordered a x28 (U.S. Spec) here in Germany on 8 Feb supposedly with the Cold Weather Package (heated steering wheel) and the paddle shifter option. I even had the dealer go double-check everything last week (fingers crossed).

Im buying used so mine wont have paddles.
When I test drove a demo car with paddles I was blown away. Having never owned a AT.. only MT.. I felt the fun in the paddles was enough to get me over missing MT.. I'm even thinking of retrofitting paddles in mine now.. |

Can you retro fit paddles to an X1? I sort of wanted them but couldn't find one with them unless I also took a lot of stuff I didn't want like nav.

You should be able to just like the E9x and E82 but the dealer won't do it for you. I haven't seen anyone do it on the X1 yet.

Ive seen the work thats involved in a REtrofit and its not pretty!
However, these claim to be plug and play http://www.motivemods.com/BMWRetrofi...-p/mm-pa-2.htm so it seems like you dont have to wire up to your shiftier and remove half the cabin to get to it.. The guy told me it works on e84 Still need to spend up to a $1000 on a new steering wheel and sifter paddles.. This is on my list of to do's... Let me know if anyone does it! EDIT: $937 I priced up for everything on their website.. without shipping... Not too bad! |
