Upgraded Exhaust 28i
Hey does anyone know if there is an upgraded exhaust, especially if the BMW Performance ones will be coming to the US X1s anytime soon? I think the 28 sounds a little wimpy

No word yet discussed on the forum. There's the debatable golf tee mod with some reported problems caused by it. For a 4 banger most people actually are surprised it sounds as good as it does. Best sound upgrade to the 28i is the 35i.

There is a possibility that the 1 series performance exhaust fits. Real OEM shows that they have 99% the same part numbers. No one has been able to confirm this however.

99% seems to be a stretch.

I think there are a few setups available for the 28i - Remus, Supersprint and AC Schnitzer.
I'm personally still waiting to try a 135i exhaust on my 35i......all the ones that are readily available to me are about 350km's away If all else fails, I should be able to snag one middle of next month when a local guy gets back from assignment. |

I recently researched the 328i performance exhaust and it does not appear compatible with the X1 or X3 28i. |

Just so everyone knows I called my dealer and asked about a 1 series exhaust on the X1s and they said it won't match. They do expect X1 specific upgrades to come out in March or April.

Im not saying it will work, merely pointing out that you shouldn't trust your dealer. |

I think there is a good possibility that those parts are interchangable. They look almost identical. Even down to the indentations at the very front of the pipe.
It would make sense that the dealer does not want you to interchange parts as they foresee potential problems recommending parts from other models. We just need someone to bite the bullet on the 135i performance exhaust for us!

Look what I found online:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alphoto...93/8273490981/ I'm going to bite the bullet and order for the 35i. I took a bunch of under-car exhaust pictures and they look identical. The mounting points are 100% the same but the only question is if the pipe will thread through one of the rear chassis braces. Have an email out to a BMW parts guy now and we will see, but I'm 99% sure it will fit - perhaps with the minor modifications. |

One more thing to point out - the xdrive 35i's have 2 midpipe catalytic converters. Removing those will take 20min at a shop, cost $30-50), and will increase sound and give you a 10-12whp gain, while NOT triggering a CEL. Plus it is totally reversible - just weld them in for another $30-50 if you ever want to go back to stock.
This is exactly what all the 335 xdrive guys did - the xdrive has the midcats (as do all n54 engines) and a popular mod is removing them (or replacing them with a N55 midpipe without midcats from a 135i, in the case of the n54.) Also, the other thing I realized is that the BMW PE piping is the same size as the oem piping. Even if the entire BMW PE piping doesn't fit, there's no reason we can't get 100% of the effect of the PE by deleting the resonator, chopping the BMW PE muffler off from the piping, and welding back on to the stock piping. The bottom line is that this CAN be done for probably $150 worst case installation at a decent shop. Doing the entire mod including secondary cat deletes should be good for around 15whp least based on other xdrive dyno charts (in addition to drivetrain losses, this is one of the reasons xdrive cars always dyno lower stock). The pics for reference: all of the pics are the stock X1 35i exhaust except the last, which is the 135i exhaust for comparison. You can clearly see the same pipe bends and rubber mounting points.

Thanks for taking the time to take the pics. It really does look similar I must say.
If the local guy with a spare 135i axle back is in town this weekend I may grab it from him for a test fit as I'll have the car on Jack stands anyway while fitting the coilovers. It would be nice to get hold of a PE, or indeed a number of other aftermarket units to see if they fit up to the X1 with the extra bracing under there. I thought this thread was looking for performance exhaust options for the the 28i? Start a separate thread for the 35i please, because every time this one is bumped I think there's some great new exhaust option for the 28i (stateside).
