Winter Sets for X1
Let's start a thread for winter tires set for X1.
Will last gen X3, 3 series winter set fit X1? I will want to look for used sets of wheels or/and tires out on ebay/ kijiji. This will be much cheaper than buying thru the dealer. I might thinking of crossing the US border to get them too... |

I need a set too and I think that they will, but haven't started to look yet. It's still summer!

Just for reference on this thread, the rim spec for the X1 is PCD : 5x120 Offset : 30 to 50 Bore : 72.6. These figures are valid for 17" to 20" rims.

Since the X1 does not come with a spare tire or jack make sure that your aftermarket snow tires are "run flats" and note that run flat tires must be mounted on special wheels - they have a higher and stronger rim lip to ensure that the run flat tire is properly held in place during a loss of air. Alternatively, you can buy a jack and space saver spare and leave them in the cargo area!

I'll probably head to the dealer and give me a quote for the same spec of that dunlop SP wintersport 3D, 225/50R17 with steelies.
If under 1400$CAN i'll probably get a sets. |

17-inch steelies are heavy and will add substantial unsprung weight. It's better if mount them on alloys. Expect dealers to sell you OEM winters which would cost +/-$2000 promo pricing. (sample: http://www.jasonkwan.ca/?p=313)
Here's a good compromise: - get replica alloys (+/-$600) - get non-OEM winter RFTs (+/-$800) - bring along an air pump, for top-ups. If one of the tires is low on air, the TPMS will go off. If safe, pullover then top-up then bring to nearest tire shop for replacement or repair. |

I have mine on steel rims with plastic trim covers. Means I can fit chains without worrying too much about damage to the (very soft) alloys. Here is a pic of the setup

My X1 came with non run flats, on the 17" wheels it is an option now in the UK, I actually chose this car over another one with the 18's I like because the 18's are run flat only. All BMW rims made in the last 5 years or so will be run flat capable, EH2 or EH+ is what your looking for. Even the old M3 rims are EH+ and the M3 CSL rims, and neither were designed to take a run flat. |

Hi, I live in Quebec city (Canada) and I ordered Michelin Pilot Aplin PA2 ZP (runflat) in 225/50/17 from Tirerack.com. They are shipped from US so I had to pay shipping, Taxes and Custom fees but they where still about 200$ cheaper for a set of 4. The total net price was 1067$ I called a dealer in my city and the total for the same tire was 1270$.

@OP:
If you forsee yourself driving to Toronto before the winter, simplytire may be able to hook you up with winter boots for your X1. Also, no harm in asking how much to ship to Montreal as well. Based on last year's pricing, simplytire offers RFT Hankook W300 Ice Bears for E90s, mounted on 17' replica alloys for $1390+tax. Obviously, tire size for E90 is different but pricing may not be far off for 225/50/17 RFT. Besides it's the same size as stock E60 (528i) so it's a common tire size to have on inventory. http://simplytire.com/winter/bmwpdf.pdf |

Yep, they are the BMW OEM set here in the UK. Cost about CAN$1800 but then everything is bloody expensive here. It did include free storage for my alternate set and free change overs so I suppose its not too bad.
Can I also just say that I am more than pleased with the tyres. They give excellent performance when things get icy and white. Did not have any problems on some very steep and slippery gradients.
