1160km from a tank !
Toyota Prius drivers beware, my brand spanking new X1 sDrive 2D gets over 1100km from a singlet tank ... and looks good doing it ! (Filled up in the morning with 1019km to empty after a 140km trip to work and back).
While Toyota claims to get 3.7 l/100km (highway), I have got (from only a few weeks driving) an average of 5.4 (20% CBD and 80% highway mix). I travel through Melbourne twice a day to work in Geelong and back (a 140km round trip) and the economy has been fantastic. Emptied the tank the other day and doing a full test, but the attached speaks for itself. Will let you know the actual km from a whole tank ... |

Nice :-)
I got 1087 kilometers last week when driving my mom's X1 23d (on mountains roads) ! Fuel consumption on those X1 XXd's are amazing. My M3 has the same tank capacity of the X1 (63 liters) and I rarely hit more than 500 kilometers with one fuel tank even if the traffic doesn't allow me to drive fast...

My M3 did 13.9 per 100 kilometers. I use the Start&Go system. I find that it's good for a high reving V8. Did you use your 18i in the city only ?

i've got a mix. but it's more like 70% city and 30% highway. I've just clocked 200kms on my x1 so i'm not sure if that's gonna play a part.
i've been hearing that for the initial stage the car feels sluggish and will consume more petrol then only after something like 3000km the car will feel more responsive and not consume so much petrol. my 525i got more responsive after driving for about 3 months but the petrol consumption like sky rocketed. |

greenfunk, I have the s18i too for nearly 5 months now and 7000kms and I've got some bad news for you - it doesn't really improve.
But what helps, I repeat, is using the manual mode. Defeats the purpose of an auto admit but it will definitely bring the consumption down as you can change up quicker - auto mode tends to hang on to lower gears too long, or is too eager to change down. |

For me, the normal auto mode endeavors to maintain 1500rpm no matter what - 35mph? 5th gear will be fine. It does refuse to go into 6th mind you! Consumption wise, I had 500miles out of a tank whilst in the UK recently, with 80 miles of that at home in Guernsey, where top speed is 35 - not much grid lock though - average about 33mpg per tank, UK was 55+ - at 75mph :-) |

You just must be really babying your cars around. For a bit of fun, I gave it a short go. I've done 59kms so far and have a range of 920kms on my 23d. I'm making sure that when i'm climbing hills or whatever, that i'm feathering the throttle to try and keep the instant fuel under 10L/100kms, taking off slowly, rolling down hills (in drive), taking foot off throttle in gear and coasting when I can but I feel like i'm being passed by people on foot. I'm too impatient to last this "miss daisy" driving technique out a whole tank but I do see how it's theoretically possible...

What you are showing is predictive range...
Doesn't mean you gonna make it. My 20d shows sometimes close to 1200 kms after I just fuelled up, yet my "best" performance was barely over 1000 klics...

£75 fill up at £1.379 a UK litre. Range was 740 miles. I hit 649 miles when the fuel light came on and pushed it to 676 with 35 miles left on the range.
Not too bad with roughly 53.3 mpg from a full tank to fuel light on. Mpg display was showing 53.3 as well A couple of weeks ago I had 55.4 on the display, but can't quite achieve that figure again at the moment. J. |

manicm & hedoniste: See! There is conflicting comments!
But i guess if you want to a bmw you've got to deal with it. I find merc's to have better fuel consumption tbh. I'm only spending about $50 on petrol a week so that isnt too bad right? |

I have a 118d and that also has shorter gears and although mine will happily do 70mpg at 50mph sitting at 80mph which is motorway cursing it is down to 40mpg. Just got rid of a new F11 520d auto touring and that would see 49mpg sat at 80mph. I guess you need to buy the right car for the job. |
