Will these winter tires fit my new X1?
Hi,
I'm new to the forum here. Just ordered my new Graphite Blue X1 and picking it up on Oct 4th. I have a question, the stock tires on the X1 is 225/50/R17. I have a set of one year new Nokian snows that's 205/55 R16, will I be okay to use them on the X1 with proper rims? Thanks. |

A quick Google turned up several pages allowing the comparison of tire sizes.
According to http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp the 205/55/R16 tires are full inch smaller in overall diameter than the stock 225/50/R17 tires, and are not recommended for use as replacements. I certainly wouldn't use that size. |

I reckon you will be fine, just be aware that your speedo will say you are doing 104kph when you are doing 100kph, however, the X1 is out by about 7kph at 100 anyway, so it will probably be more accurate.
Normally the main concern is the tyres catching on the arches, but there is so much space with the X1 I don't see it being an issue at all. Edit: Sorry missed the 16" thing. You will read 96kph instead of 100kph and loose some comfort. In the UK our stock size is 245.45.17 so less of a difference going to the sizes you have, maybe try and see what you think? On our Merc estate I went from 245.45.17 to 225.45.17 as I already had them, where the correct size would be 225.50.17, so about the same amount out, it was fine, and I will use them again this winter. |

You are not going to be able to get these on your car.
The Canadian x1 needs 17's to clear the brakes from what I can tell. I just test fit a set of rial Salerno wheels in 17x8 29et and they clear the diameter of the calipers by less than an 1/8th of an inch. Perfect fit on the car but they just clear the brakes. These wheels are known to fit on a 335i which not all 17's will, so I would say 16's are a no go. Dealers just started advertising 17" steel wheels as the base package. Good luck with your choices!
