Navigation?
Waiting on my new X1. It should be in this week. I didn't order the NAV. Does anyone else think its ridiculous to pay $2500 for the NAV package and then another few hundred each year for updates? I bought a $4 holder got my iPhone 5. The NAV on that works great and includes traffic and constant map updates. If you don't have a smartphone, you can buy a 5" portable Tom Tom with free lifetime map updates, traffic and voice control for $177.

It is ridiculous. I did not order it on mine. I plan to install single DIN GPS in the upper compartment. If factory wiring allows it can be turned on when the factory radio is on. Then the sound can be routed to AUX input.

Updates? What does that mean, new roads and stuff? If you don't pay for the updates does that mean your navigation shuts itself off after a year? Please excuse my confusion.

It is ludicrous. Especially with comparable free technology in my same iPhone 5.
In my opinion, it used to be a must have. Not anymore. Perhaps if it was $1,000. But $2.5k, no chance.

Yeah, way too much.
I ordered it however and wanted the screen on the dash. Plus we'll be using Nav lots on our travels. But I didn't get leather, nor premium and executive packages so the price wasn't too bad.

The $2500 is for the technology package, which gives you a lot more than just GPS navigation. The display is the heart of the iDrive system, and without it, you will have limited functionality. The tech package also includes voice control, plus BMW assist and Bluetooth (the latter two costs $650 without the technology package). The tech package is also a requirement for parking assist and rear view camera.
Yes, it's expensive. But not compared to the overall price. In my opinion, saving money on not getting the tech package is like saving $50 on buying a DVD player without a remote control. Sure, it's usable without, but... |

Using a cell phone for navigation is fine if you only go where you get reception. Otherwise get the Tom Tom. For a hundred bucks, you'll have a reliable navigation when you need it most. I like the BMW navigation myself, including the voice recognition. Having a good navigator is a safety issue from my perspective....I remember well the days of driving while reading road maps or hand written directions....not something that I want my family members doing.

I purchased the Tech Package, and in hindsight I wish I hadn't. I've had so many issues with it I prefer to use my portable Garmin most of the time anyway. The voice control is laughably bad, and entering addresses with the iDrive controller is tedious and distracting. I travel to unfamiliar areas on a regular basis, and a good navigation system is an absolute necessity for me. This is not a good navigation system. Live and learn.

It is well worth it... $2500 is not just for the Navigation. It is basically the brain of the car. I have not had any issues with the voice commands, my iphone 5 connects and integrates flawlessly and the backup camera and parking assist is awesome. Overall it is well worth the price tag not to mention the value it adds for resale...

BMW assist = I'll call roadside from my cell. Bluetooth = I still get. I might miss seeing phone numbers in the screen. Park assist and rearview cam?! = LOL, its not an 18wheeler. I drive a crew cab GMC daily and I only need the beepers. All in all, the tech package will continue to be of less and less value. Maybe for facebook and twitter feeds while you're driving. Cause thats a good idea!

The VC works fine when choosing from a menu. It's speaking the destination that's the problem. When the system can't distinguish between Indiana and Louisiana, you know you have a problem. Factor in the many unusual city and street names, and the chances of getting to your intended destination get pretty slim.

Is it true that TomTom technology is used in BMW nav? or do they run their own?

I like the iDrive/Nav and everything else that comes with the tech package. I use the MyBMW app to allow me to use google search and send POIs to the iDrive. We don't have iDrive in our 128i and use a ProClip mount for iPhone. Both the iPhone TomTom and the new Google Map Apps work just fine through the car speakers with iPhone adapter cable (w/extension cable). |

Has anyone look into something like these: http://www.amazon.com/Player-BMWX1-2...rds=bmw+x1+dvd
I personally hated the box on top... what I end up doing was to connect an LCD car display an use the cables to connect to an iphone. |
