Room for a Spare Tire?
Any chance of fitting a spare tire in the storage space under the trunk?

Did a search (before i posted) on a couple of terms and it came up empty - I was surprised. Perhaps you could share a link from your search?

I'm choosing to stick with runflats on the X1. I tossed the RE050 RFTs on the E82 and E90 and just carried a donut in the trunk.

I recommend to those that insist on suggesting that OPs use the search function, feel free to recommend but then post links to the "searched" (and found) info. It's soooo much more helpful. |

I haven't looked to see if there is space but for the past 7 years(since my '07 MINI) I have always switched out my runflats and then carried a tire plugging kit and a small 12V compressor. Used the kit twice with good results. Both times I picked up a nail.
And regardless of what some say, runflats CAN be repaired depending on the size and location of the perforation. |

I went to a local BMW Dealer and they said that there is a mini spare available for X1, but it costs $400! He also could not confirm that it will fit in the trunk area properly where there is some space underneath for the mini spare. I have swapped out the RFT and installed Conti DWS and I am very happy with the switch. I just carry the tire inflator and made sure I am signed up with AAA.

Well, never drive out of phone range then. While there's a 97% population coverage, it drops to 80% for roads, and less than 50% of the area of the mainland 48 states. Not to say anything about Alaska and most of Canada, of course.
If you drive a lot around the country, losing coverage is something you get used to. And that includes BMW Assist, AAA and 911. In most of Europe, there's a close to 100% geographical coverage, so it makes more sense to drop the fifth wheel. But in the US and Canada, I think they should have provided a donut, even with runflat tires. |

Between my M Coupe and our old 135i on non RFT's, I've gone over a dozen years on non run flats with one blow out. I've dealt with plenty of slow leaks and carried a plug kit and an air compressor, but I have never wanted, or needed a full sized spare.
Between all the M cars, Corvettes and other cars out there without RFT's and no spare, I think you'd hear more horror stories if there really was a big issue with this. Learn to use a plug kit and check your tires frequently (TPMS is not very accurate) and you'll seldom have to worry about a thing. Or stick to RFT's, they are much better than the old RE-050's that many of us were tortured with. |

I have had way too many punctures, a good deal of repairs to run flats too, to feel like I can rely on tires not getting damaged. Since the X1 would be a practical vehicle I'm inclined to keep run flats on so we are at least less likely to end up in bad situation with an undriveable flat and the baby on board. With hope the non all seasons have decent grip. It would have been nice to have a full size spare like my old E46 did, but I'm sure they are dropping that extra weight for better mpgs

The town where I live, population 10,000, there are two tire repair places, and they seem to survive fine. People don't talk about a blown tire because it's common. And the guy who owns the vette has tried to sell it for a long time now |
