Yeah, it's funny that BMW knows the bearing is faulty, but won't fix any out of warranty. Too many things are like that, and most car dealers don't repair engines or transmissions.
If it was my $7k, I'd look to get one out of junk yard, and have a machinist rebuild bearing in that one, then, swap so not much down time. I live in oil fields of West Texas, and you can buy any type, size, or brand of bearing, and make nearly any piece of metal, even crankshafts.
Improved durability of parts is the kind of mods I do.
