Fuel float in tank may not be floating very well.
Same unit may have electrical problem.
Diesel can get muddy sometimes if the station pump doesn't filter it out.
My Innova in Indonesia uses palm oil solar, and at first oil change the diesel filter had what looked like mud on it.
To fix usually means drop tank and take out sending unit.
Ask local BMW mechanic how much?
