BMW have done it before in the USA. A few years ago all the 3-series petrols were 6-cyl 3.0l engines but branded as 325i,328i,330i etc. As I understand it has to do with the cost of certifying engines for the American Market. In fact they have done the same in Europe with the 2.0l diesel engine.

I still suspect they will introduce the X1 with a single 3.0l engine branded as a 2.8i. It will only be available as a auto in XDrive form. Other variants will follow later. Personally I think that the X1 will be a niche car in the USA, like the mini. The X3 will probably be the main focus in the next few years as it will appeal more for the NA taste of bigger SUV's
