That would be because it's illegal in the US. TPMS is required by law on all cars since 2007. I've heard somewhere that Audi has an exemption to use ABS based system because theirs is that good but that might have overzealous boasting by a fan.

To be honest having had a car with TPMS and ABS based systems I actually prefer the TPMS. Something about being able to see the exact pressure and not having to rely on rotational differences that gives me that extra piece of mind. I've already had a few cases where the ABS system failed to detect a 20psi loss because the tire was a run flat.
