The experience reported by Tracus and Ja Gio is confirming my suspicion that the Conti DWS06 is the tire I'll be happy with, but I'm a little unsure because of your comment of ruining the handling. I enjoy the crisp handling on the stock LS2's, but I'm in similar (read: crappy) road and weather conditions as you, and I'm willing to give up a little handling to get slightly better tread life, good all-weather traction, and MUCH better ride quality.
Sooo.... "very sloppy" relative to what? Curious what your reference point is...

Go for the Continental DWs tires. They are a very good choice.
The second pair I have is a new generation of DWS, improved.
My X1 had 5 harsh winters and handled them with success.
As a note, I did not find any big issues with the handling. On the other side keep in mind, the RFT are harsh and don't handle the curves very well.
As long as I have the X1 I will keep buying the same Conti DWS.
