bingo...it's the view of owning the card only for the first year. So for me, come January, I redeem for another $200 before my annual fee anniversary. Now there has been examples of pretty sweet retention bonuses for year two to potentially offset the $450 annual fee down to like $150...but you need to justify a $150 annual fee in lounge visits and other benefits.
