It's actually pretty simple and I'm surprised no one has yet to get it correct.
A lawyer has gone to law school and possesses a J.D.
An attorney has passed a bar exam and is admitted to practice in a state.
All attorneys are lawyers but not all lawyers are attorneys. Despite common usage, the terms lawyer and attorney are not interchangeable.
