BMW's permission is another fight. I think they may have recently discovered how to add retrofits to their ConnectedDrive servers. Also, some of the parts seem to require their help to prevent it from becoming a brick.

Based on that reddit thread, the guy with the i3 seemed to have the best way of going about it. Having the existing ATM replaced with the 4g model, by the dealer, so its fully coded to his VIN out of the box.
The routes I've found are usually...the ATM you'd buy off a doner car cant be re-coded, so you have to get a ID6 head unit and have that coded to the ATM. Resulting in your cars vin being different than the head unit....but allegedly that works....I'd rather find a way to have everything tied to my cars correct VIN. And have someone help find me all the part numbers i need to order lol
