Roger Moore was 46 when he first played Bond, and had the part for 12 years. People today are staying in better shape, so there's no reason why a 44-year old couldn't take the role.
Having said that, I've never thought Elba right for 007, and it's got nothing to do with race.

Indeed but those were different films. I also seem to remember that the owners of the franchise wanted to avoid using an older actor when starting a series of films.
Moore was however their first pick over Connery. Maybe he was cast for more films because I. Fleming felt Moore was perfect for the role.
