1. Get a real spare.
2. Get a mini spare.
3. Carry flat-fix and portable compressor.

We carry a real spare for trips because the two times we have flats the tire was toast, were hundreds of miles from home, and in locations where a replacement tire was not possible because it was the weekend. The draw back is a real spare takes up room in the boot.

I do not like mini spares because of the limited speeds at which one should drive with them. They are fine if one has to drive a few miles but not 500 miles to get home.
