Resident insider has been wrong before. The BMW CSLs in the past have not been overly radical or more radical than the current GTS is. The features that they've emphasized on are weight savings and aerodynamics to a certain degree. Even the power output has not been that different from the regular M offerings.

The CSLs were always daily drivers that you could take to the track and compete. Price wise, they've not been as expensive as the M4 GTS is when compared to the regular M4. They've never had roll cages like the track focused GTS does. Why would BMW move away from tradition and redefine the CSL brand into something that it never was.

Price wise, you're looking at ~200K prices if it was slotted above the GTS which would be hard to fathom if the car was not the M1 CSL. The innovations and futuristic features that are not weight related would first be seen in the i-series and maybe even the GTS. Hence the order would still be:
Base ///M < Competition Packet < CSL < GTS.
