winter tires?

Hello Folks,
I'm looking for a second vehicle and the x1 28i is on my short list. Jut curious do the current owners switch over to winter tires / wheels for the winter? I'm not sure what the car comes with, probably an all season tho.

Canada has had the car for a while, what did you guys do? How about you northern US folks, what are you planning on doing? Thanks

Nice, my 335i with dunlop m3 runflat winters is a beast, handles winter like a champ.

I figure maybe the x1 with AWD would be ok for the first winter with all seasons on.

The M Sport comes with summer-only tires. In order to contend with the lake effect snows we're exposed to here in southwest Michigan, I always outfit my vehicles with dedicated winter tires. For the X1, I have elected to mount 17" Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3's (non-staggered) in order to maintain the best handling when the roads are dry. I should be bolting them on sometime in the next few weeks.

Thanks, I agree with you that dedicated snows are ideal.

Which wheels are you going to use?

Michelin Tires

Just received my Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 ZP Run Flat with MSW Type 22 BLK PAINT. I added the BMW center cap logo. Looks good (center caps not on the picture).

I just ordered Michelin X ice 3 in stock size for stock 17" wheels. I'm in Seattle and want to get into the mountains even during the big dumps for the best skiing.

Rial Salerno. Simple 5-spoke design, accepts OE center caps and it's German-made.

+1 on the Michelin x i 3 or Nokian studless on 317 spokes. These 2 are the best snow/ice tires on the market

i'm curious to know whether 17s will fit X1s with M-Sport packages... don't they have bigger rotors/calipers as part of the package and need at least 18s to clear?

Tire Rack assured me 17's will fit. I'll know for sure in a few weeks.

They are not runflats. I like the concept, but until they prove to be as comfortable and reliable as conventional tires, I'm going to avoid them when possible. I'm counting on the ride and handling of the winter tires will help me decide whether to replace the summer RFT's with conventional rubber when the time comes.

I bought a set of 17" wheels and winter tires from the dealer when ordering my 35i, so they can switch before handing it over.
The extra sidewall of the 17"s should make a big positive difference for winter driving.

And not switching tires but wheels makes it a much simpler process too.

I run the new Nokkian Hakka R. Haven't tried them yet, but have only heard good things.

Will run them on stock 17" wheels.

I used Kumho izen kw27 for my first winter but I was not happy with them. Last winter I switched to goodyear eagle ultra grip gw-3 tires and I am very happy with them
