Resale value?

Has anyone else noticed the poor resale values on X1 xDrive28i? At least here in Seattle, used X1s are going for pretty poor prices even at the dealer. If you check Edmunds or Kelley values, it looks even worse. Am I just lamenting normal depreciation or is demand for used X1s just not good?

It is normal for BMWs.

Last time I bought a 2-yr old fully loaded 328i with 25k miles w/ CPO warranty to 100k for $29.8k from dealer. The MSRP on that car was $47.5k.

Resale here seems high. I could probably get almost 38k for mine. Judging from what I see on trader.ca anyways.

I just bough a CPO 2013 X1 with the premium package and 28k miles for $23k. That's about what I traded in my Forester for with similar miles. These things would be a terrible buy if new. My CPO 335d with 30k miles was $29.5.

They hold value OK here, but Toronto is booming compared to most US cities.

Let's say new costs you $42K all in, after three years you're still looking at over $30K.

The KBB on the one I bought was around $29k, but the dealer is in a very high end part of town (there is a Porsche, Ferrari, and Aston Martin dealer in the same lot) and I think they had a hard time selling an orange hatchback.

From Canada here also, and just curious if prices will drop a lot more after the new gen releases? (which it's understandable, but i think a lot of users here mentioned here that BMW holds their value well).

I have seen some prev 3 series gen that holds their value well here also. Just my perspective, of course.

Must be a Canadian thing then. BMWs are notorious for having terrible resale value in the US.

Mine is in exceptional shape (literaly) with 40,000 km on board and fully loaded plus extra 3 years warranty over basic and I was playing with the ideea of selling it so I can order a new one before the FWD will show up. I don't know how they keep the value but I was very dissapointed by what I have seen so far. Yeah ,many dont have lighting package, professional audio, convenience package, etc, but people are dumb, they just look in kijiji and start comparing...
The dealership is a big time crook, the offer was in a mid twienties. I asked the guy if he is on something...

I am a bit different, being Australian i talk "all in" pricing, not this BS north american thing where taxes and fees are apparently not counted even though I am paying for it.

Agreed many are stripper models with not much in them.

In the US you don't pay tax on whatever amount your trade in is for, and tax fluctuates on a city to city basis. Licensing is also state by state as well, and is very cheap in a lot of states. I paid like $700 in tax and registration.

How was the Forester ?
It rode nice, held its value really well, was very reliable, but has a very cheap interior and exterior. Rattles everywhere. I also had an older wrx, which had weird bold quality issues. Very reliable and capable cars though. I still keep an old 4x4 Loyale wagon around as an emergency/spare vehicle.

My dealer gave me a number of 28k for mine after just a year. Looking around on trader.ca etc and I could easily sell mine for mid 30's. The dealer is a ripoff. They had an '12 M3 during the summer time that they wanted 85k for. I told them I might as well buy a new M4. They wouldn't budge on the price.

I understand they need to make money on the sale, but they seem to really low ball. When it comes time for me to get a new car, I'll definitely never trade my car in and sell it privately.

Not bad for a German car but still not that good. I sold my 7 year old WRX with 70k miles on it for $18k. It cost $25k new.

Local US economies don't really dictate used car prices. Supply and demand typically do.

BMW whores out its cars in the US with cheap leases. This floods the market with used cars which hurts resale. Which is typically awful for midline and premium cars anyway. Couple the above with expensive maintenance costs and you don't have a good recipe for strong resale.

I will say this: For all BMWs the initial price drop is the worst. After that the depreciation slows down dramatically on X1 and 3 series cars, while 5s and 7s catch up with 3 series prices within 5 years. BMW makes enough 3 series based cars worldwide that there is some economy in parts & repair prices, while the higher echelon BMWs stay expensive to fix, thus limiting their used car appeal.

I bought my 14 X1 xDrive35i MSport Ultimate HK when it was 12 months old with 15K miles for $36K in August. That was a drop of $14K from sticker. Six months later similar X1s for sale now are still in the 36K-38K range. The first drive off of the dealer lot is a big hit!

Yeah, obviously I will sell it privately, but still, they offer nothing but want a lot. From my calculations, they offer 25-28k and sell them for at least 6-8k more.

I guess that I might keep it, it was a wonderful vehicle so far, I just like the new mirrors from the LCI. Otherwise, it is ok, we love the sparkling bronze that is not offered anymore, etc.

I was even thinking if is worth it to sell it and put almost 15k more to buy a new one, plus 3M, plus mud flaps, plus other things that were done.

Buy yourself some custom wheels, or a JB4. Those things will get your interest back. Cheaper, too!
