N20 will never approach the butter smoothness and sweet notes of the I6, BUT if only the 4 was available with a manual it WOULD be an easy choice I think- never driven the set up but I imagine it to be much better ie. not constantly guessing what gear I want and when there's 8 to chose from its a tough ask. I do need to sample a paddle equipped N20 which definitely could add to the amusement factor if its as fast acting as I imagine.

Yes, you can do those mods (I won't, at least not to a new car with new parts under warranty) but if you're optioning up the N20 model you get within about 2k of the 35 so to me, as they sit, I like the 28i and yes it has potential to be more than it is, but for a little more I WANT the 35i for its right out of the box goodness. If agility and razor sharp response is what you're after, the X1 isn't quite the ticket although I suppose it could be but then ultimately it comes back to lack of a manual, uh oh here it comes...

It wasn't long ago you could order an X5 with a manual and now they don't even offer it on the X1?? It no longer saves you any $ on the 1 or 3 and yet the autos get more sophisticated and now at no cost- ie heavy cost to us manual faithful now subsidizing the non-drivers, I mean non-manual drivers of course I thought this brand would continue to foster 3 pedal cars but instead it seems like they're trying to make a case to just do away with them, which is a damn shame.

You can tune the 6 too and then it becomes a beast. The 35 is fast as it is, cant imagine adding another 60 or so HP.

All of these tunes void the warranty correct? I am well aware of Magnusson Moss, etc etc, but my question is, are there any tunes/parts available THROUGH BMW that will unequivocally NOT void the warranty?

Though looking through the list, I don't see any PPK for an X3 or X5...

BMW has their Performance Power Kits, which usually include a tune and better cooling.

Got some more useful seat time in both cars today, neither with paddles unfortunately. Well this time I drove the 28 in manual mode and it was quite a bit better than I remember. Still felt the ride of the 35 with the 18s was better than that of the 28i with 17s- crappy goodyears I guess and I'd up to the 18s with Pirellis anyhow. The 4 is impressive when its in the 3-6 happy zone. Most notably I took the same route with both cars, A/C on about 10 miles of hilly highway resetting when just underway and actually did a bit better (23.7) vs (23.2) with the 35i. Did feel more lean than expected in the 35 on a rotary, but then the 28 felt nearly the same it is a CUV after all. I think I prefer the non-servotronic steering of the 28i and shifting the 8s manually is snappier, better. Bottom line: its a tough call to the point where it could come down to what car at what price on what day- both have many redeeming traits. I am concerned that I wouldn't come close to the 33 hwy with the 28 but at least I'd get (almost) a free nav screen for the "sacrifice" in displacement. The saga continues...where's my diesel b!tches

To me, yes. 28 is perfectly adequate for this vehicle, 35 just has power in buckets, really more than it needs most of the time but also tough to resist as your 28 build climbs to and above 40k IMHO. I'd buy it with either w/o hesitation but the 35 is a little stealth bomber- unsuspecting rocket which I like a lot.

Yeah I found it hard to believe that some of the reviews said it was hard to notice the difference with 60HP difference.

Drive both

I drove both 28 and 35 with similar trim but on different time and location. To me the do feel about the same off the line; the 6 pot may pull little stronger on upper end but they are very close. I believe the 6 can do a second faster 0-60 but just doesn't feel it. The 8 speeds really help a lot.

To me the N20 is one of the smoothest and better sounding 4 pot engine but still can't touch with the BMW 6. I believe that is the biggest different between the two.

MPG is important to me and since I am not getting much option the xdrive28i is better deal to me.

By the way am I the only one getting it at invoice?

bmw x1 35i 1/4 mile time this is stock for comparison

bmw x1 35i 1/4 mile time this is stock for comparison the weight was 3870 lbs. the slip shows 13.6 sec 1/4 mile time and 1.9 60 foot time so this car is under rated from bmw they give the stock 1/4 time at 14.1 sec and motor trend gave a time of 13.9 sec 1/4 mile time but that was on a brand new car and i dont know if they cut off traction control or brake tq it up to 2800 rpm on the take off, also need to shift at 5800 rpm for max power dont go to red line. iam sure motor trend didnt do all these things. so my bmw x1 35i m sport is just bad #$$.

sorry didnt add time slip will be in next post.

I received a 28i as a loaner today. Same trim line, but less many options as my 35i. I find the engine to be adequate for daily driving but not nearly as fun and refined as the 35i engine. I'm happy I chose the 35i.

The only thing I dislike about the N20 28i is its diesel like sound effect...and the 35i gets the same body...no dual exhausts like those on the 335i...sucks! It looks identical to a 28i other than standard angel eyes. I guess it depends on the driving need...35i for the open highway and red-light drag race, and 28i for the twisty back roads. The 35i does not have a more rigid body or better suspension, so you will just keep relying on its bigger rotors to kill the excess speed you carry into the tight corners. In stock forms any way. With the 28i you can probablly drive the car in a more flat-out manner.

Anybody drive both (x28, and x35) and notice the difference in weight distribution? In other words, is there a disadvantage having the extra weight all in the front?

I went in for a 28i and on the initial drive I was very impressed with the turbo 4. They had the exact car I wanted on the lot that day and it was a 35i and I ended up purchasing it. A lot of people have said it but best way to describe the two engines, the 28i is peppy and is more then adequate for a SUV shopper. The 35i has more power then it know what todo with it. A few things to note, Bigger brakes on the 35i are nice especially with the cost of good aftermarket brakes and n55 for our cars has better aftermarket

I laughed reading this thread - why do people care if the X1 or X3 is a couple of hundred pounds heavier or if its ~1 sec faster? They're crossovers and in real world driving, both models x28i and x35i will do just fine... LOL! :-)

Because I have excess testosterone and need to always be first to the merge, even when Porsches try to cut me off As long as I don't run into a 997 or 991 turbo, anyway.....

Serious answer: It's my only car due to space constraints and it's fun to go to the road course and drag strip. I wouldn't have bought it if it couldn't be made quick (which means I would never buy the 4 cylinder).
