CAD X1 28i staggered 18 (sport pkg) impression?

I'm curious to find out how jarring the ride is for owners with staggered 18-inch setup (sport pkg for canada).

- is it comparable to the ride of E90 17" stock RFTs?
- the X1 being based on E90 platform, anyone notice if the suspension travel bottoms out easily?

My 23d MSport has sport suspension and 18" blade alloys (wider at the back than front) Ride comfort is personal and subjective, but I can say that for me the set up is fine.

I live in a rural area with badly repaired narrow lanes, road calming speed humps, and potholes so if possible I try to avoid hitting them, sometimes it's not possible and the suspension set up can feel hard. On motorways etc it's brilliant.

The other day I did a journey of 350 miles on all types of road, most of the time in heavy traffic and I got home feeling a lot fresher than would have been the case in other cars that I've owned.

Most of the time the handling and ride are superb. Not quite as hard as my Porsche Boxster S Sport Edition which at times felt like it had no suspension!

My X1 has sports suspension and 17"'s. Hard to compare, but a lot of people seem to want a "gin palace" to float along in. I don't find mine at all hard and would have disappointed if I didn't get sports suspension. Whichever way it's a compromise on sporty vs comfort. A few threads seem to say the regular suspension ride can be hard, but I would stongly argue otherwise.

it seems bmw "fixed" the short suspension travel of E90 xi platforms adopted for the E84. current E90s bottom out easily resulting in a jarring ride even on 16" RFTs!

i hope others would chime with their experiences as well

Mine has 18" and sport suspension and for me it is soft.

We've got the the 18" RFTs with sport suspension and the ride is certainly firm, but I love it - you really feel the road - much like every other BMW I've owned. I have not been disappointed in the ride quality (on highways, it is especially good), and i have just ordered a set of Pirelli 18" run flat snow tires and new rims for the winter. And I've never bottomed-out the suspension, so there's plenty of travel without it ever feeling too 'disconnected' from the road.

@Phil777, is the reason for going with 18" winters is because stock 17" won't clear the calipers?

No - just liked the look of the 18" wheels better on the X1 - never even considered 17" winter wheels and tires. My wife's previous vehicle was a Mini Cooper S and it came with small wheels (15" or 16") which we upgraded to 17" and then also purchased 17" winter tires with some beautiful aftermarket wheels - looked fantastic! (and was also great in the snow, interestingly enough). Wheel size and style can make or break the appearance of a vehicle...too small doesn't look right, but neither does too big... Size does matter!
