Love my X1 M sport 2.8 sdrive

Ive owned over 25 BMW's over the years and I have been very impressed with their styling, performance, and overall comfort. I just completed my 1st 1000miles on my X1 and frankly it's my favorite BMW! I live in SoCal so the roads are good. I got a whopping 28 MPG my first tank! Yes I tried to baby her a bit but I played too. 50/50 city/freeway. The tranny is unbelievable! I've never owned an automatic! I passed a cement truck today, and I needed to get the job done quickly, X1 didn't let me down. Snappy shifts, but no abrupt delivery of power, just smooth transitions through three gears in a matter of seconds. My only DISSAPPOINTMENT so far is the radio reception. I have Harmon Kardon sound but the radio sucks. Yesterday I received my Sirius radio via UPS from Sirius and installed it and I couldn't be happier! I'm a happy camper! For the dough the X1 has to be the best value bar none that BMW has ever introduced! Towing capability, near sports car handling, (I had 3 135's prior to my X1), a back seat that seats 3 passengers, golf clubs that fit side to side without angeling them! The list goes on. Now for just another 30-50HP and 50 lb torque, and I'll be in heaven.

I'd like to see your list of BMW's. I'm on 15, didn't list a used 5 series I bought for my son. Congrats on the X1 sdrive M Sport which is what we have. I agree its a great BMW, handles great, rides nice, good power and nice interior so what's not to like. You get 18" or 19" wheels? We went with 18" for a little softer ride, had a bad experience with the 2007 X3 M Sport with 19's that was a stiff as hell ride. My 335 E93 is manual and always drive manuals but yes the 8 speed auto is nice although I rarely use the paddle shifters.

Admittedly I counted my wife's BMW's too, all in the family, hers were auto however. I was in the BMW business for about 15 years and always has at least one new BMW a year. Mostly threes, of every engine. My favorite was a323 cp spt pkg first year of e46 I don't remember the exact year. Car was under 3000 lbs and was a blast. Two M3's, 2z4's.

Good question! Probably the price tag being first, economy second, weight up front being third, the outstanding 8 speed tranny on the 2 ltr, and finally the ability to tune it up a few more ponies at a low cost. I loved the n54 & n55 in my 135's, but at higher RPM's the 4 sings a pretty tune too.

Also my goal is to pass this x1 along to my wife when her x5 lease matures, she already loves the x1, so it an enconomical two bird kill with one car. Come next spring I may get the all electric hatchback, I saw it over the weekend and its cool.

I went with the 18" wheels for same reason as you, their too harsh.

Since you both have the car that I can't test drive in Seattle, I'd like to hear your impressions of the sDrive EPS. I have read endless debates about EPS vs HPS. I've driven the xDrive with HPS, and it felt heavy but very connected. As a point of reference, I am currently driving a Lexus CT200h; great handling, vague EPS, and no power (10 second 0 to 60).

Since there are no sDrives to be had in the Pacific Northwest, despite there being only a couple inches of snow a year in Seattle, I cannot try out the RWD version. I am interested in impressions of the EPS and of how the stiffer suspension feels on regular city streets, i.e., potholes, imperfect pavement, etc.

That's odd; every dealer in the Bay Area has 5-10 sDrives. I bought one of them today.

It seems like a lot of people drive out of state to buy their cars for various reasons -- can't find the right model, options, better deals, tax reasons, etc. I suggest calling a few dealers maybe in the Portland area. Otherwise, you might have to check around Cali to check on options/pricing and find a flight deal to get one.

The sDrives are very popular down here in Mexico. Compared to our previous VW Passat, the X1's electric steering produces lots of feedback without the need of servotronic for very slow maneuvers (e.g., parking, u-turns.) At high speeds, it is still very stable with no tendency to wander around on the lane/road. The Passat also had a 4-cylinder turbo engine, but the X1 has a much less noticeable turbo lag. If you have a 6-cylinder non-turbo engine you might notice a slight difference the instant you push it hard. It is a lot more noticeable in eco-drive mode (part of its goal anyway) and virtually no turbo lag if you move the shift selector to Sport mode. BTW, the 8-speed ZF transmission is indeed a dream as others report. For another comparison, we test drove an Audi Q3 and that one did have a really light, numb steering and about same turbo lag as our Passat.

We have no sport package, but we have 18" wheels. The suspension feels firm, but go with sport suspension package if you still want a tad firmer suspension. We encounter a lot of potholes here and we tend to be extra careful. We've still hit a few potholes and man do we feel them! I believe this is mainly due to the combination of 18" wheels and RFT tires (the Pirelli P7 that came with the car are grippy around tight curves.) I am glad we didn't choose the stiffer suspension for the bad streets we encounter in certain Mexican towns/cities (highways and toll roads are generally in great shape.)

I guess coming from a Lexus, one should be really pleased with the sDrive X1, but there is obviously no substitute for an actual test drive. Personal preferences can greatly differ.

My bad but I didn't realize my 2.8 Sdrive had ESP. At low speeds the steering is light and quick, at higher speeds the steering begins to feel much more BMW like, e.g. heavier but very direct. Frankly I could discern little difference at speeds above 30 MPH when compared to my 135's, and I had three of them. I wouldn't change a thing.

Same here, I have a E93 335 and don't see much difference. Maybe M Sport with summer performance tires make a difference but I ordered mine before X1 was in the market to do a test drive. I personally would ignore all the discussion about EPS, if it was so bad why would 3 series sales be up. In another 3 years hydraulic won't be available on any BMW's or most cars so just go with the flow.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm that much closer to pulling the trigger now. I've located some sDrives in Northern California (via web). I was hoping to trade the Lexus in, which might make that harder. I might have to order the X1 locally and take the bus for a while.

If anyone is familiar with the Seattle climate, any comments on xDrive vs. sDrive. My impression of the area is that everyone thinks they need a Subaru. I learned to drive in Buffalo NY, and found that RWD with snow tires works just fine. Seattle winters are light rain and an occasional freeze. Almost no snow here, but there are a lot of hills.

I guess I am generally curious why xDrive seems so popular and if it's worth the extra money. The dealer told me that buying an sDrive would hurt resale value in this market.

'99 was first year of E46...fine machine it was... 'cept for coolant expansion tank, window trim on coupes, window regulators on sedans and the beloved final stage resistor. That car actually weighed about 3300 lbs.

If you tend to trade in your vehicles, the dealership or national car dealers (e.g., Carmax) will take your vehicle and often send them to other markets where there is higher demand without much penalty to you. I guess that you need to consider the demand for a RWD vehicle in your local market if your intention is to sell to a private party. In the end choose the car that fits your personal needs best.

If you end up ordering the X1 locally in Seattle with a BMW dealer, quite often I read of members who are able to work out a deal in which the dealership will give them a loaner... not for two months, but a couple of weeks seems customary. Hopefully, they can get the X1 you want from another state and have it in Seattle within a week.

Thanks again everyone. I test drove an xDrive M Sport today, as well as a sport line. The M had 19" rims and did ride a bit truck-like over crappy pavement. The sport line was pretty similar to my Lexus CT in terms of suspension feel. My co-pilot liked the M a lot; she surprised me on how aggressively she drove. We both felt that the M was the better package, and hoped 18" wheels would soften the harshness a bit. I could have gone either way, but the piano black interior trim on the sport line is tacky, IMO. If only you could get sport seats in an x line.

Since the closest available iteration of what we wanted was $46K on the lot, we decided to order an M sport with just the options we cared about. We offered KBB max trade in value for our car (2012 CT with 7000 miles) which is $27,772, and $500 over invoice for the X1. They were fine with $500 over invoice, but would only offer $26,000 for the car. We ended up walking away.

The ride home was interesting. The CT is a really comfortable car, but I no longer felt like I was driving. IOW, really disconnected from the road. I will once again have to convince myself that 42 mpg makes it worth it.
