Maaaannn we are all getting off track with this.

I just wanted people's opinion on the X1, i was looking back at the forum and i see cadiallc's and such, and i was like, what??

Speaking of which, what is everyone's opinion on the new Audi A3 hatchback coming back, could that be the X1's competitor as well?

OK, I'll say it...

You should be thankful there's conversation in here at all. I'm not sure how many people even read your long-winded, somewhat disjointed original post.

I keed I keed.

So we can't talk about Cadillacs, but A3s are OK?

I'll bite...honestly, although I do, I'm not sure many X1 buyers consider it a "hatchback". I'm sure a higher portion of members on here do...but your average mom buying an X1 is buying it specifically thinking it's NOT a hatch.

I'd LOVE an S3 hatch.

I'm sure the Q3, even though probably a bit bigger, will be the X1 competitor.

No, you can talk about whatever you want. it was just a thought with the A3.

Tbh, i am quite surprised, i never would have thought/guessed that this post would rack up so many views and comments. it surpassed my X1 story by a long shot!

But no, i am glad i can here other people's opinion on cars, especially the X1.

I would have definitely been cross-shopping an A3 sportback. As it was, my final three options were Golf R, V60, and X1. I was really looking for more of a hatch/wagon than a CUV, and I probably would have ended up with a 1-series hatch had they been available over here.

Yeah we would have cross shopped, the X1 is technically a wagon but just BARELY.

Definition of wagon is window behind the B-Pillar.

Worth noting that the Golf R and S3 use Haldex, like the GLA45 and F48 X1. There are a ton of Haldex versions out there, with the VW cars having the latest, which can send over 90% of power to the rear, while MB uses a few generations older that can send a max of 60% to the rear (the same as the static xDrive split). The Mk7 R finally has a fully defeatable DSC, I'd guess the MB doesn't.

It will be interesting to see which version the new X1 uses. I haven't paid attention to the 2AT to see if it's offered with awd yet.

Soooo close on the X1. I think someone needs to measure how much of the cargo area the roof actually covers.

Hey, there's a window behind the C pillar on mine. (visually) I bought a lifted wagon.

In my opinion, i always looked at the X1 as a baby version of the X5, they both look similar from the side!

I guess thats the biggest debate, whether or not the X1 is a hatchback, wagon, small SUV, thing.

Most of my friends don't know what to call it.

I usually call it a hatchback to sound cooler!

lol

Could it be that the X1 is like the Chrysler Pacifica? The Pacifica didn't have an exact name. It couldn't be a minivan because it didn't have sliding doors, it was too high to be a wagon, but too low to be an SUV..... it and the X1 are just one of those cars that don't really have a for sure name. Such as the 3 series being a sedan for example.

According to the EPA, they classify it as a "Large Car" but then use the term "hatchback" when describing it's volume..???

Confused yet?

It's on a car platform, so it's either a hatch or a wagon. If the roof covers 50% or more of the cargo area, it's a wagon. otherwise, it's a hatch. I can't tell from pictures, and I haven't taken delivery of mine yet. So someone is going to have to go out and take some measurements.

Yes you are right.

According to CNET, the X1 is based off a reduced version of the X3 which is based off of the 3 series

The X1 is basically an old 3 series, so it is on car platform, but visually, it seems difficult to tell what it is

Could that be why it is not common?
lol

Five days a week, I run about 80 miles on one of the US's busiest highways; I've owned my X1 nearly 2 months and today I saw my third X1. I love that it's so rare. Adding to the "what was that?" effect, I've de-badged the little-beast.

I love the combination of economy (compared to mid and full size SUVs), performance (compared to nearly all small SUV's and hatches), and relative utility (compared to a sedan or coupe).

I see quite a few X1s here in the UK. They’re classified as estates on our V5 documents. I colleague of mine who bought a 3 series estate car said to me that she looked at an X1 but it was neither a 3 series estate nor an X3. I think she missed the point. I wanted a 3 series, my wife an X3 – solution was................

They’re popular with people who don’t or can’t drop into 1 or 3 series. My old 1 series with sport lower suspension became a pain getting in and out and it’s worse for the passenger who has to add kerb height into the equation.

"Rare" depends on where you're from. I'm in Toronto, Canada and while they're nowhere near as common as an X3, there's quite a few around -- I saw three go by during a half hour walk yesterday.

I see a fair bit of them, I tend to notice them more now I have one I guess though. Us Xenon owners are a rare breed though.

It's a sport activity vehicle meaning it has higher clearance than a normal car. It also has a slightly higher fuel consumption because it is little taller.

The uniqueness of X1 was new tech rolling on an old (liked) chassis and RWD (for those that choose it).

Here in Vegas i see many but stripped. My car doesn't look like them at all ;-)

It is small. Americans don't want to spend a lot of money on small cars. It is a wagon. Americans dont like wagons. However, I think it outsells the three series wagon.

I also feel it is overpriced for what you get.mm

I don't know where you live in Maryland but in my part of the state they are fairly common, I have seen 3 on my 2.3 mile commute in one day.
