Think about the Grand Cherokee, Toyota4runner and Nissan's that are rear wheel drive. Around here you can't find a 4 Runner with all wheel drive. Even the X3's main competitor the Lexus is sold probably 90% of the time with front wheel drive so what's the hang up? I would not be surprised to see an X3 with S drive in the future.
I doubt it, I think the percent of 4WD in compact CUVs is much higher, as majority of the U.S. population has to deal with snow and ice.

I do agree having RWD option for X1 is nice. I bet most of X1 will be sold in AWD form, except the ones in SoCal and Florida.

If they only offered Sdrive here in Alaska, I doubt they would sell a single one.

Sorry but how many people live in Alaska? Just in Florida and California you probably have close to 15% of the US population with no need for 4 wheel drive except to go skiing in the mountains. I lived in Cincinnati, Charlotte and many cities in the south and 4 wheel drive would rarely ever get used unless you had to tow something and it's not really needed then. I have a 4 runner with 2 wheel drive my son tows his boat with. Not a lot of snow between S. Cal thru Texas to Florida so I think I'm probably not far off on my percentages. Heck this year no one in the country probably needed all wheel drive. I grew up in the mountains of West Virginia and my family never had a vehicle with 4 wheel drive and got through plenty of winters fine. If you don't have snow tires summer performance tires are pretty useless with all wheel drive anyway, they don't even work that good with all season tires. I don't believe I have seen a Chevy Tahoe or Suburban in many years that have 4 wheel drive. I guess everyone that doesn't live in S. Cal or Florida orders 3 series with X drive, my bad. What I'm saying is if it was so important than all 3 series would be bought with X drive and they aren't so it can't be that important. People buy the X3's and X5 for utility, driving position, room and style primarily. They sell all over the U.S. where all wheel drive is never used. Had two X3's and an X5 and never went off road, drove in snow or towed with them just like most people that buy SUV's.

Would be interesting to see, but taking into account the states and European countries that get a full four seasons I doubt it will happen. Feel free to point and laugh at me if it does.

I think you probably see all the FWDs due to your location. I bought my first BMW in Nashville, and couldn't find an xdrive sedan to save my soul! I spent my first winter up here on studded tires and was leery of the throttle all winter. Traded for the same MY as soon as one showed up on the lot and haven't looked back. So long as you don't get crazy with it, it will get you out of a lot.

I would say that the only place in the Southeastern US that one might need AWD would be in mountain areas. Otherwise, it's a waste of money here in the sunny south. I probably wouldn't buy an AWD X1 if that's all BMW offered, due to the added weight and decreased gas mileage.

I have a friend who lives near Blue Ridge, Georgia, which is a stone's throw from the Tennessee/Georgia border. He has a 1st generation X3 and his wife bought a new 2011 328ix last year. The dealer in Chattanooga had to swap out with a dealer up north to even find one. Since they live on a remote mountaintop that sees snow more than once a year, they actually use AWD. Here in the Atlanta area, we might see a little snow once every two years.

Has there been any information on the towing capacity for the X1? I've towed with BMWs in the past, but I see nothing in the options for a tow package. It would be nice for towing a jetski or small boat.

BMW Canada doesn't even offer the tow bar, they said transport canada never approved... what a BS.

A bit disturbing... I was hoping for some towing capacity. Maybe on the 35?

Sdrive will get almost identical fuel economy at 24 city and 33 hwy, sits slightly higher for better view and will actually be slightly smaller than the F31 and a lot cheaper in cost. Still has hydraulic steering instead of electric and a solid chassis in the E90.

I'm specifically looking at this vehicle to handle boat ramps, tow 2,000lbs and get me to and from work quickly and in style --- I would like to see official tow ratings in the US. Either way, I know it's capable.

Just returned a 535i Xdrive, and am thinking about ordering one before winter gets here. How much off the MSRP should I be negotiating for a built-to-order one, or do I have to pay the MSRP? And does the car come xDriver28i (all-wheel-drive one) comes with backing assist beams as standard? I've read that it does in one of the release notes, but I didn't see it anywhere on the ordering list. Thanks. Cheers.

Why does everyone expects to get a big discount on a vehicle that hasn't sold one piece in the US is not realistic. I would make the assumption that there will be very short supply the first 6 months and realistically I don't know why a dealer would do more than a $1,000 discount. I think they have more incentive to discount inventory they actually own verses an order. They would rather move something they are paying carrying cost on and on an order they have a captive customer where they know they have a sale. It also depends on what city you are in. If you are in a market with several dealers you have a much better chance than in a city with one dealer. There more than likely is a lower profit margin on the X1 compared to the X3 due to where it's made although the Euro is pretty low right now.

Several others asked the same question to me in private emails from other threads here. I ordered one and so everyone started asking me how big a discount did I get so I responded. Just saying, I have bought 15 BMW's since 1995 and you shouldn't expect much if any discount until they have some inventory. I bought a Z3, Z4, X3 and X5 when they were all launched or launched with new engines. Just responding to several responses I've had so don't take it personal.

Now we need that kind of headlight into X3s.
I hate X3's headlight that looks like it came from 90's.

Nothing changed on M-Sport; however, HK sound was no longer a stand-alone option. It now must be purchased with the technology package.

Correct, margins are super thin on the X1 when compared to X3. It should be interesting to see what deals BMW plans on offering, but to be honest; I don't see any huge incentives until the end of this year.

But you do see some incentives when the car is available. Just came off of a 535i xDrive. How much of an incentive do you think I can get for ordering the 28 xDrive or the 35 xDrive? Thanks.

P.S. I didn't see Space Grey as an available color choice for the 28i xDrive. Is that color only available in Europe?

It looks like Space Gray was dropped with the LCI update.

The mineral grey metallic replaced it. I ordered one in that color. It has way more shine than the space grey. Really looks awesome!
