DRLs in poor visibility

Just come home up the M6 in heavy rain with spray everywhere. I lost count of the number of drivers who seem to think driving on DRLs is enough in these conditions. Don't they realise that they only work at the front and you can't see them until you a right on top of them? Is this restricted to the UK or do drivers elsewhere prefer to be invisible when driving?

Prepare for the attack of the looney bird. I made this same observation recently and was lambasted for making fun of everyone's favorite marketing ploy.

Honestly, I'd rather have that than what we get here. Take rain, add a little spray from wheels and you get Hazard lights, 20mph drivers in the fast lane, and they STILL find ways to wreck going in a straight line. I don't get it.

IT'S JUST A LITTLE RAIN!!! WHY THE HELL ARE YOU GOING 20 AND CRASHING?!??!!?!

End rant.. sorry

LOL at this thread. I've never fully understood why headlights are even on any sort of manual switch. They should just be on low beam with the key on. Would make life much easier for lots of stupid people who can't seem to understand what lights do.

I've seen so many people drive at night with nothing on, not even DRLs. It's dangerous. Some manufacturers make the dashboard and switches in the cabin illuminate with the key on, why not the headlamps too? If the dash and everything lights up, dumb people think their headlamps are on, when in fact, they're not.

C'est la vie. Not much we can do but bitch and watch out for stupid people to protect ourselves.

Not sure about DRLs, but I found a cracking issue with the auto lights on my X1 in fog.

They work for a while, but when the ambient light is high enough they switch off. Not really a fault (as the sensor is just doing its job and is probably affected by light bouncing off the fog particles) but something no one thinks about when setting the lights to auto.

In the last batch of thick fog a local radio station was reporting numerous drivers driving with no lights on. I thought idiots until I checked my lights and found they were off.

Any bad weather now and I turn the lights to dip beams.

As for driving with no lights at night... I've been guilty once. Pulled away from a restaurant in a heavily lit car park and just didn't think. Got about 50m up the road and was being flashed. Felt very stupid.

It's been my experience that, with US settings, if anyone mentions the word 'dark' within earshot of the car, the lights come on.
I've not tried running just fogs in this car, tho' in really dense soup I've done it in the past.
The automated lights are easy to get used to. I hopped in the Jeep Wrangler the other evening, and had to remind myself to turn on the lights.

The auto lights don't seem as sensitive as the ones in my previous VW - they would come on going under a railway bridge!
The spray on the motorway on Thursday was enough to warrant have the rear fogs on. I set the lights to manual before turning them on, but I'm just thinking if you can turn the fogs on while on automatic, and if you need the front ones on first.

I hadn't thought about it before, Twix, as with the VW you had to turn the switch manually onto sidelights and then pull the switch out for front then rear fogs.
It's probably safer to turn them on manually though, because as said previously, the fog could confuse the sensor and you could be left without any lights.

Mine don't come on automatically. I have to manually push the buttons every time. They don't default to last setting with the engine off. Could be a Canadian thing, could be every car, I don't know.

Let me see if I understand correctly; bounceback from the fog lights is making the auto lights shut off?

Yup I have seen a lot of that, driving with just the running light on no tail lights at all. I'm guessing the dash looks real pretty. And they don't seem to get it if you flash your hi beams, they just keep driving and texting.

I swear people are just getting stupider buy the day, and there everywhere!!
