Compact scissor jack

I'm continuing to pursue the idea of being able to plug a flat on my X1, and central to that is being able to lift the car and remove the offending wheel.
Does anyone have any specific suggestions of compact, lightweight jack that could be stowed in the back?
What I had in mind is an aluminum iteration of the old scissors jacks we used with VW Beetles (the jackport ahead of the rear wheel always rusted out...), but I'm open to suggestions.
Thnx,
Moon

BMW retails a jack kit, which includes a BMW-specific torque wrench, a scissor jack, and folding wheel chock. There's enough room in there to keep your small toolkit too (which has your wheel lock in it, along with your tow hook, and useless screwdriver).

Thanks, Zip. Sent them an E-mail, and I'll ask you as well...is this kit compatible with an X1? The ad specifically excludes several other X-models.
Thanks again,
Moon

The X1 isn't that high off the ground...I've got one (granted, it came out of my 135i, now sold) but the jack points are the same.

Zip, don't mean to be such a skeptic, but the jack does have enough reach to get the wheel off the ground? What are the dimensions of the kit itself? My bride is having kittens about this; we're likely taking the X1 to FL, and she's concerned about having enough space.
She's of an opinion that we just call AAA if we have a flat, but I'm old school enough to want to be able to solve my own problems.
Happy to hear your jack fits the jack pads on the car; that alone is a selling point.
Best,
Moon

The hell of it is, last vehicle in the house to have a flat was the Wrangler, which of course has a real spare...go figure. Everything else has donuts, tho' I keep a little compressor and plugs in all of them.

If not, stick a small block of 2x4 under the base. The X1 is essentially a 1-series under the skin...very little difference.

You can buy a space-saver spare tire for it too.
http://www.bimmerzone.com/BMW_Perfor...T-E84-KIT.html

On that page they also list the same jack kit as being an option for the e84 X1.

Okay, Zip', ordered the jack kit; sounds like the solution to a problem, and I like the idea that a wrench and such are included, and that it should fit the jacking pads on the car.
You've been a huge help; thanks.

Would like to know how the scissor jack lifts the car, easy or a bit hard going. What is the Kg or Lb's rating? Cheers.

If past history is any indication, scissors jacks lift fairly easily, but require beau-coup turns of the shaft to accomplish this.
This is likely one of the reasons that the Woods Brothers don't use scissor jacks for their quick work in the racing pits....
I'll file a report here when mine shows up, and Zip' might be able to give us some details now...

BTW, do we have any idea where the space saver spare is actually supposed to fit in the trunk? I'm doubtful I'll go that route (plugs n' pump take less space ), but I am curious.

I haven't had to jack the X1 with the scissor (used a floor jack when changing to the winter wheels/tires) but did have to jack my 135i Coupe twice (flat in the same right-rear runflat twice). Many turns required, but the handle rachets.

As to where you put the space-saver spare...cargo net or stuffed in with the rest of your holiday gear.

So there's no means of rearranging the storage tray under the trunk floor but above the battery and fuel pump to stow a spare in there?

Okay, jack kit came today and I gave it a quick test hop in the garage.
-it fits the jack port correctly
-it will lift the car far enough to remove the tire; I lifted the left front and presume that it would be adequate for the rear as well
-it does indeed take a bunch of turns to lift it, but the ratchet speeds the process quite nicely
-didn't try the torque wrench yet, but presume it too should work
-my only gripe; for the price it would have been nice if it were aluminum and a bit lighter, but the kit is well done and relatively compact; it fits in the pocket in the LR of the trunk and is retained by the elastic strap

Zip, there is a specific admonition not to use a wood block for more lift; not sure if this is really that much of a hazard or just corporate Charley Yankee Alpha thinking.
Thanks for the tip; now to get a plug kit and tire pump; any suggestions on one you like?
Best,
Moon

Told ya it would... As to using wood, well, ever try to scissor-jack up a vehicle in sand / mud / snow? You need a small wooden block (2x6 is best) to keep the jack's foot from sinking. Manuals are written to limit liability in the over-litigious Excited States -- very little is all that practical in real-life.

Dynaplug kit. Don't forget to keep a pair of pliers handy too, as usually it takes some effort to pull a nail / screw out of a tire...more than your bare hands can do.

Hence my remark about 'Charley Yankee Alpha'; the corporate types do keep their derrieres covered.
Good tip on the Dynaplugs; I've seen that name. Good tip on the pliers as well; I'll get a small tool kit going in the bag for the jack. How about a 12V compressor? I have a foot type, but that might take about forever.

BMW or Continental mobility kit...compressor and slime (though I won't use that part of the kit).

Zip', found a 'Bell' labeled 12V pump at a local autoparts store, plus some plugs styled as 'heavy duty'. It's all reasonably compact, and the pump will reputedly fill a tire in 3 minutes. Found a place for all of it in the trunk without unduly compromising storage and still having place for my usual junk. As per your suggestion, a 4"x6" piece of plywood found its way into the trunk...don't tell the folks who made my jack...Also stuck in a small pair of ViseGrips and a Leatherman tool...
As a side note, just drove down the mountain to Bedford and back in an absolute deluge, and was very happy with how the car handled, and how well I could buzz slow traffic on secondary roads.
Thnx for the advice; happy to have the plugs, jack et al, and hope I never need any of it.
