BMW NA has issued a recall for certain 4-cylinder powered "20i" and "28i" models for potential brake power assist problems. Here is the recall information from the NHTSA.

The affected models/years are as follows:

BMW/320I/2012-2014
BMW/328I/2012-2014
BMW/428I/2014
BMW/528I/2012-2013
BMW/X1/2013-2014
BMW/X3/2013-2014
BMW/Z4/2012-2014

NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V-627 (14V627000)

Components:

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Potential Number of Units Affected: 8,988

Problem Description:
BMW of North America LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon, 2012-2014 BMW 320i
Sedan, 328i Sedan, 320i xDrive Sedan, 328i xDrive Sedan, 2012-2013 BMW 528i Sedan, 528i xDrive Sedan, 2013-2014 BMW X1

sDrive28i Roadster, and 2014 BMW 428i Coupe, and 428i xDrive Coupe. Due to insufficient lubrication, the vacuum pump that
supplies brake power assistance may fail.

Consequence:
A failure of the brake vacuum pump results in a reduction in braking power that could increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will install a locking ring in the camshaft to retain the camshaft seal disk in the proper location,
free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Attached is the official NHTSA Acknowledgement Letter.

I searched and found both recalls on safecar.gov. This current recall is an expansion of the previous one. I recall my service advisor telling me some time ago that not all N20 engines are affected. I also recall seeing the SIB online (SI B11 08 13) which said there were 2 different cam shafts used in the N20 at the time (perhaps different manufacturers?). One was OK and the other was not. There was a second related SIB (SI B11 01 14) with instructions to install a repair kit....I haven't been able to locate a copy without getting one from bmwtis.com. Anyhow, perhaps BMW has discovered more engines with the affected cam shaft.

I've checked my X1 for recalls on bmwusa.com several times including last night...it's always reported my car has no current recalls. I suppose not receiving recall notification letter from BMW shouldn't be a surprise.
