Daytime running lights (non Bi-Xenons)

Is it just me, but I am annoyed that BMW claim that the X1 has daytime running lights as a standard option (in Australia) when it fact all it is is the regular low beams switched on all the time.

In my view daytime running lights are supposed to be different lights that use less power, are separate from the regular headlights and are there for the vehicle to be seen in daytime.

Thoughts?

Thats a bit underhanded if thats the case.
Do you have the Xenon lights yohans? Maybe its as it should be as you say, if you have the Xenons?

I do not have have the Xenon lights.

To quote the BMW collateral

"As the first premium vehicle in the compact segment, the X1 features a long list of luxury features as standard including Automatic Climate Control, Cruise Control with brake function, rear Park Distance Control (PDC) power windows and mirrors, BMW Professional CD/MP3 audio system with USB / AUX-in connections, Bluetooth connectivity, Multi Function Leather Sport steering wheel, daytime driving lights, 17-inch Light alloy wheels and Storage Compartment Package.

Personalisation options include Panoramic glass roof, Rear View Camera, interior Design Cool Elegance package, quality Nevada leather trim, sports seats, BMW Business or Professional navigation systems with the latest iDrive controller, Bi-Xenon Headlights, Adaptive Headlights and Harman/Kardon Surround Sound System."

Response from BMW SA was that "daytime driving lights" equated to the regular headlights being on all the time.

The DRL's on my VW Jetta are just the regular low beam headlights but both my BMW's with Xenons use the angel eyes as DRL's. That's one of the reasons I went with Xenons and also the adaptive feature that is awesome when you go around corners, beside the superior lighting of the Xenons.

Yep, also Xenons here.
But indeed, it's a pity the angel eyes are not LED yet (I'm thinking of replacing it as soon as I find a certified "LED lamp" that doesn't cause flickering/errors.)

I sort of like the look the way they are now. Not to bash another brand, but Audi with their LED DRL treatment is kind of dumb since they go off when you use the turn-signal on that side.

At least 'standard' in Australia means more than UK :-

Those bits are all extras over here..... Oh, depending on model that is as the 23 gets extras as standard (Don't know if it's those, though)

I guess they get the DRL thing from the fact that you can set the normal dip beam to be on automatically. I know it's a let down but I started consoling myself over options like angel eyes because I was sat on the inside and wouldn't see them anyway.....

Would any of you guys add a DRL strip under the bumper as a DRL if you didn't have xenons fitted?

I would like to retrofit angel eyes but its just too troublesome and expensive.

Garage List
Most companies use a dropping resistor in series with the high beam lamp for a DRL. I always hated that because it causes the high beam to burn out faster.

In any case, having the low beam on all the time during the day does make it easier for other drivers to see you. If the weather is foul, your auto lighting should turn your marker lights on as well. Or being a responsible driver, you should be.

As far as power consumption, it's such a minor drain to your alternator that fuel consumption wouldn't change.

To me, yes.
But I don't like aftermarket add ons, here in our country a lot of cheap old cars have those lights. Usually kids that are trying too hard.
So I have a negative association with it

A simple Vag Com adjustment takes care of the winking DRLs. Only set up like that in USA I think. Stupid DOT regs.
