Again with the coolant

In my first year of ownership, I had a low coolant warning. SA told me it wasn't unusual, that coolant can "settle" after factory. He said there was no sign of leakage when they topped it off and I'd probably go a long long time before needing to top off again.

That was in 2013, maybe summer. So this morning I got the low coolant warning again. Three years later, maybe around 35,000 miles more on odometer. I'm skipping the dealership this time, since in a couple months I'll be having my last service under warranty. I'll make sure they check the hoses and so on thoroughly then. For now I just picked up a gallon and some distilled water. Should have those on hand anyway.

Maybe it's a lot of short commutes in LA traffic? Assuming there's no slow leak (and I've never seen any sign of leakage under car, if it would drip down). Still love my X1! But it's thirsty for coolant...

My GUESS is there is a really small leak somewhere, and if you could get the dealership to check the hoses and tighten the clamps even if things look good visually then that will take care of the issue

I'll post again when I take the X1 in for its last "free" service in 2-3 months. I'll be sure to request a thorough check of coolant hoses, etc. It was a matter of a couple minutes to add more coolant (mixed with distilled water). Alert immediately disappeared.

By the way, my second vehicle is a 2015 Audi A3 Cabriolet, and it had a low coolant warning too in its first year, at about 10,000 miles. When I pulled into the closest Audi dealership, they just whipped out the coolant mixture, topped it off right there in the service lane and sent me on my way. Seems to indicate how common this can be. But having it happen for a second time in first four years of X1 ownership does make me think something may be up. Otherwise, everything's fine.

I have had to add coolant every year...about a cup I would say. Very normal on german cars, the coolant does evaporate....

Mine had a micro leak from the engine to the expansion tank, and I think I have a crack in the expansion tank now.. I fill a little coolant every few weeks, one of these days I'll tear it apart...
