For me from a driving point of view manual wins every time. However in a lot of city driving an auto is more relaxed. Also, in general, the bigger an engine the more likely I would go for a auto. I think however that auto boxes are changing as well with things like steptronic and PDK the line between the two is becoming less defined. Modern auto boxes are sometimes now also more efficient than the manual with all the electronic wizardry.

I have gone for a auto on my X1.

Also gone for the 23d Auto and highly recommend modern auto-boxes over manuals for any daily use.
My only complain is that with the 23d, even the 6 gear auto is not "long enough" for highway cruising. I wish they would have put a couple gears more in there.
(The 8 gear auto in the new 5 series is great.

Fuel consumption really depending on your driving style. If your a lead footed driver your won't expect to return lower consumptions. Being a new car the engine needs to run in as well. After 4 months of ownership with a equal combination of both freeway and city road driving my car indicates an average fuel consumption of 7.9L per 100kms. Still not quite the 7.6L as mentioned from BMW but still good for car of it's size and weight

I have Manual xdrive18d as there were no automats when I first ordered for this model. Consumption is good and I have the auto start/stop function but I feel that shifting is a bit stiff.
Anybody having the same experience?

I have had a 20d for 2 months now and the consumption is sitting at a steady 7.3L/100km. This is with a mix of urban and semi country roads.

I had my manual xdrive20d for 3 months now and I feel is ok however I do agree that changing gears can be a bit stiff (my golf GTI feel a lot better!) But the consumption is really good compare to the golf!!! i'm getting about 430miles on one tank on mostly city driven (the golf only get around 290miles). is this normal for everyone?

Forgot to say my wife want Automatic cos she feel the car is too big (she not the tallest lady!) and she can't find a comfortable driven postion! Has anyone find the same thing?

I recently tested a Xdrive20d automatic (I have a SDrive 20d manual)
I found it more noisy than mine.
But I do not know if it is because of the automatic gearbox or because of the XDrive

any other experience ?

I reckon I'm biassed. But I just love manual. And the stiff (I'd call if notchy, perhaps) touch from sDrive20d (the only one I have tested, but I ordered a 18d) I like it a lot. I just couldn't enjoy driving through curvy roads without manual. But hey! maybe I change my mind someday.
