JB4 log review please

I was tinkering my Map 6. Can someone please take a look at my log for me? I had 94 canadian gas in the tank. I think it is suppose to be about the same as 92 gas in the states.

If you didn't realize it when you tried to post the first time you cannot upload CSV files on this site. You will need to either link them to the thread on N54tech or upload it to Datazap.me

You would really benefit from something that controls the timing target, flash tune, even as a BEF. You have a 6 degree timing correction on cylinder 4 and a couple of the other cylinders have 3 degree corrections, I wouldn't worry about the 3 degree corrections. The second thing I notice is that boost tapers really fast at a certain RPM which is causing you to overboost. If you really want it to drop off that fast you'll need to lower duty bias more so you don't overboost. Your trims almost max out higher in the RPM range. If you plan to stick with the JB4 then you need FF wires connected. If they are already connected then change FOL to 60 and log again. Last thing I noticed is you have a methanol signal in the log but not shown on your mod list. I don't know why it would be there but that's odd. If you were spraying methanol you would have better timing and could run more boost.

My final thought is you should run a flat boost profile not a curve. You have the turbo to do it. Without a BEF I would set it to 14 flat and look at timing. You would want to reset duty bias back to all 0 or 50's.

Thanks for the super thorough reply. I think I am octane limited at the moment thanks to my local crappy Canadian gas. I will unlock my DME sometime next year so I can replace JB4 with MHD. That should allow me to run more boost with less aggressive timing.

I already have the FF cables connected. Methanol injection indicated as 100% is normal even when i don't actually have meth installed on my car. I tried a flat boost curve before and ran into issues. The car was very rough at low rpm driving around town speed. I personally perfer a progressive boost curve as the driving experience is smoother.

In the mean time, I will just reduce max boost by 0.5 or 1 psi and adjust FOL to 60 or 70 and relog. Hopefully the log would clear up a bit.

I am more than willing to review your logs and point out ways to improve you setup. I have found that Terry and Steve are very short and not always descriptive with their replies. I assume it is due to the volume of reviews they go through daily though.

You shouldn't run into any issues running a flat profile but I can understand wanting a ramp in. I would at minimum remove the decrease in boost at higher rpm and maintain whatever your peak boost value is until redline. I found that when running lower octane, the more consistent boost is, the less timing corrections you will have, within reason. Adjusting FOL up will keep your tirms and ultimately your AFR in check.

Settings, parameters, and logs from the JB4. If you're new to any kind of tuning or how a engine works there is a pretty big learning curve. OP created a map where he sets the boost target for every 500 rpms. He then made adjustments to make sure boost followed that target.

Thanks for that thumbnail. The JB4 is for the 35i only, correct?

Understandably I don't follow the N20 as I have the N55. I did hear that some people bent rods with JB4 on map 2. It seems they aren't as strong and cannot be pushed as far above stock power levels as the inline 6.

My first BMW was a 2007 328i. I started to look up things I could add for more power and EVERYONE said to sell it and buy a 335i. IMO if you have the N20 and are looking to make some more power you should sell the vehicle and buy one with the inline 6.

I increased my FOL to 73 without lowering boost. It seems like my timing correction issues has been resolved. I can actually feel my car at partial throttle at around 3-4k rpm is smoother than before. What do you guys think?

csv file can be find in the following thread on post #5.

thanks!

Looks good. Only thing I would do at this point is bump duty bias up at 3,000 to 59 and at 4,000 to 57 or 58. Always hard to tell with only one log to review though. To test your octane and timing corrections shift into another gear and stay on it for a few more second. We can see if timing recovers post shift.

With 92 octane I run 15 psi with about 6 degrees of timing. It is slightly more aggressive than I like but tuners lock their files so I cannot adjust timing to be a little lower. Someone might look at this and say how is the PS2 worth it if you run low boost. My car on pump with the upgraded turbo is as fast as it was with methanol and race fuel pushing 20 psi on the stock unit.
